Loved all the stuff on the walls. The food was ok, the location above average. I would probably not go back with all the other choices around, but I'm glad we went.

Our favourite bar/cafe in South America. Like going back in time - waiters in djs, history on the walls. Great coffee and snacks. Go if you are in the area

Honestly, I know I'm in Buenos Aires when I pull out a seat, order my cafe con leche & media lunas then allow myself to watch the world go by. Time in this place is what you should never depend on, here you let your thoughts & mood dictate the rate of your actions. From the black & white tiled... More

Jam packed with tables and photos, this classic cafe is perfect for stopping for coffee and a snack while roaming the San Telmo fair. The bar is scratched up with tourists leaving their mark, and the service is friendly. Make sure you get a table with a view outside, and don't count on any wifi while munching.

We called in for a wine and beer after a walk down Defensa on the Sunday market day. Very busy bar and the service was a little indifferent - prices ok. Great spot.

The food was disgusting! The wine was great. I would probably stick to breakfast options on the menu. They were out of all the pastas except for lasagna and the seafood pasta. They were obviously not fresh handmade pasta like it Emma's described. The seafood pasta was inedible.

Very near to our hotel we visited the "iconic" bar at Plaza Dorrego:the interesting part here is the history: the famous people (tango heroes,writers,...) came here. Graffiti and other "artefacts"

We stopped in for breakfast at this traditional cafe on a Sunday, the day of the San Telmo Antiques Market. It's located on a corner of the square so you can really absorb the Sunday market vibes and enjoy the background noise. The inside of the cafe doesn't look like it's changed for a long time. The have an original... More

Four of us ate lunch here on a Friday afternoon. The bar is right on the square. People watching is one of the best things about the bar. we had steak sandwiches (lomito complitos). Very tasty and went well with the cold Cristal beer. As much as we liked the food and the ambiance, the service was awful. We had... More

Staying in San Telmo

Neighborhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
