The service is good, the staff acknowledged us as we walked in. Our drinks and food came out fast and everything that touched our table was not only looking good, but was also delicious. I ordered the Dargle pizza which is a smoked pork, poached pear, biltong and onion rings pizza. I think this is my new favorite combination. The atmosphere is very good, there is a jungle gym for the little ones, highchairs as well. This is a great spot for all ages.

We lived in Maritzburg many years ago, and visited today for the first time in quite a while. Sagewood was recommended when enquiring about places to eat, and what a delight it was!
I will make this trip again just to have lunch at this beautiful Resturant.
Ideally situated in a nursery next to a river, it's a bird watcher's paradise ! The food was scrumptious, wholesome, flavoursome, and beautifully presented, served by friendly, super efficient staff.
Sagewood also boasts a bakery of a wide range of wholesome Artisan breads and cakes.
Sagewood is a true gem, and I would highly recommend a visit to anyone residing or just travelling through Pietermaritzburg.

This was my first visit to Sagewood, and I cannot believe I have lived in Pietermaritzburg for 5 years and never been here. The setting is tranquil and relaxing next to the river and the food was good and beautifully presented. Thank you.

Every time I go to Pietermaritzburg I make a point of going to Sagewood and have never been disappointed…. Until today. My husband and I both ordered the Seashells Pizza which sounded wonderful on the menu, however what arrived at the table did not vaguely match the description. Each piece had one calamari ring on it except for two and after a search I managed to find two prawns. No sign of the promised spicy mussels nor anchovies and the “crispy onions were soggy and oily. The pizza was covered in a masala style sauce and that along with an overly amount of caramelised lemon was all I could taste. I got halfway and gave up on what was a below average disappointing pizza.

We went to Sagewood for breakfast on my wife's birthday. In the past Sagewood was known for quality food and good service, however on this occasion the waitress took forever with our meals (granting no apologies). Once the meals arrived my food was cold, my cup handle was sticky (I didn't get it replaced, I made the waitress aware of it ) and the cutlery was dirty which was replaced 5 minutes later,after I spoke to another staff member. After our meals we ordered more hot drinks. That took forever, we then spoke to another waitress, who simply made excuses for the waitress blaming the kitchen staff. The waitress didn't apologize for the food and drinks being served late. The service at Sagewood really needs an improvement or better trained staff.

We have always enjoyed Sagewood Cafe and its exceptionally peaceful environment. Yesterday we planned to experience a brief lunch, sat down by the bar area, and bonded with a most humble employee making pizzas. We had the displeasure of witnessing and being party to the humiliation of this same employee by his boss who decided that right then would be the optimal time to tell his employee things like, "this is the adultworld."
He was reprimanding the employee for being unable to complete 30 pizzas in a single working shift, jeopardizing the superior quality food they are well known for. We found it far more unprofessional that the boss or manager would decide to speak disrespectfully to an employee in front of us than what the employee was being accused of. This continued intermittently for over half an hour while we were there eating. It was very uncomfortable and we were not able to continue our conversation with the gentleman rolling out the pizzas for the remainder of our meal out of awkwardness.
We were thoroughly unnerved by the way in which this man spoke to his subordinate. We implore that employees receive the respect due to them as human beings.

Yes, it was wrong of me to get angry with my longstanding staff member in front of you as customers, for that I apologize sincerely.
I was at fault and simply reacted to a situation that was actually more involved than what you had perceived unfortunately.
My staff and I are family - our relationship extends for a number of years, growing our beloved Sagewood to what it is today, through blood, sweat, tears, hard work, good times and bad, some unpleasant situations and other really wonderful and inspired times. Through thick and thin we have always stood and will always stand together, proud of where we have come from and what we are today within our community.
The restaurant business is incredibly challenging on a number of fronts.
We have to be on top form 100% of the time in the front of the public, if we slip up or make mistakes, we often pay dearly for them, as is the case here.
I'm not condoning my behavior in any way, other than to say we are all human and make mistakes.
The situation in question was actually a matter that had been communicated and resolved prior to this exchange between myself and my staff member. Unfortunately I reacted offensively and for that there is no excuse other than a public apology.
We have already resolved our differences since this event and are all in harmony with our understanding of what is required and how to go about it going forward.

Ahhh man, just loved it. The outdoors, the stream, the birdlife, ideal for that quick early meeting, for tasty little snacks just as you like it. Gluten, Wheat and Lactose intolerances should be catered for more, as there is a huge community and am sure more people will use Sagewood if they provided this service, however there are a few that one can eat, but we need more options.

We finally visited Sagewood again after the regulations opened up. We were fulfilled beyond expectation and this café has really grown to another level. The standards, quality, flavour, wholesomeness, and service (felt "through" the masks) are impeccable. We had the ribeye and beef fillet with a delicious mushroom sauce and mash, absolute perfection!! All I can say is this is the place to be in PMB! So impressed. Thank you so much.

Excellent service from waitresses. Divine coffee, & we did observe some scrumptious looking breakfasts at other patrons tables. Lovely seating on the covered deck, perfect for a sunny winter day in KZN. Good value for money, & we’ll definitely be back to sample the breakfast & lunch menus.
All COVID guidelines adhered to by staff, waitresses & other patrons.
The resident kitty is very sweet & well behaved, sitting next to my mom in law (who loves cats).
Overall a lovely experience after perusing all the plants in Blackwood Nursery (coffee shop is part of the nursery & situated towards the back).

Great spot to get wonderful food in Pietermaritzburg especially if you are looking for something other than a chain of takeaways. The atmosphere is relaxed and calm and the staff are all friendly and helpful. Wide range of healthy food options which are delicious (never eaten something I didn’t enjoy @ Sagewood). WiFi available too

The food is excellent and adequately priced. Friendly staff. However, it is a noisy place at lunch time: they put the music too loud, so people have to shout over it and over each other. And you have to deal with the flies...
