Sakhumzi restaurant situated on the bustling Vilakazi Street in Soweto is a must visit for locals as well as visitors. This is where you experience the true South African vibe. You can sit there for hours enjoying the authentic, tasty traditional South African cuisine and drinks. Mandela House and Desmond Tutu's house are a short walking distance from Sakhumzi.

Sakhumzi lies just across the street when visiting Mandela House in Villakasie Street 8115, Orlando West, Soweto. It has a vast shadowy terrace and a friendly staff that is well trained in handling the stream of tourists at this place. The food is typical African: different dishes like curries and stews, salads and 'mielies pap' (corn porridge) are presented in... More

We stopped by Sakhumzi for lunch and enjoyed a delicious buffet, lovely wine, and warm welcoming service. The street performances were fun too!

It's located on the main drag of Soweto. I had the lunch buffet (about $12). Fresh food constantly coming out. No complaints.

Sakhumzi is a must for anyone, not only international travellers. Every South African should also visit this restaurant in Soweto to experience our local traditions and 'lekka' local food. Situated on the only street in the world that housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners, it is a very vibey tourist location that is safe to visit. With all sorts of... More

Our guide took us to Sakhumzi Restaurant after our tour in Soweto. What a treat! The buffet style offering allowed us to sample many authentic South African foods, which was a culinary delight! We even tried intestines, which was delicious, as long as you could get past the texture of the dish. We would not have found this restaurant on... More

After exploring Johannesburg and Soweto, my wife and I stopped for lunch at Sakhumzi Restaurant. This is obviously a hot spot to bring tourists as was evidenced by the tour buses in the vicinity. However, we were able to get nice seats outside and enjoy the delicious food. The lunch menu consists of a buffet that is found inside; there... More

Was very busy on our visit, but added to the lively experience. Food was interesting, as a buffet, but could have done with some labeling. Seems to be a major part of the local tour groups, but worth the visit.

Sukhumzi is a restaurant that is alive with locals and tourists sitting side by side and consuming authentic South African cuisine in the heart of Soweto! The food is flavorful once you open your mind and your palette to their native cooking. The food was good enough to go back to the buffet table for seconds. Despite the long line,... More
