My partner and I were in Sandton in Jo'burg for just one night and looked for a restaurant that does game: Chaplin's featured highly so we made our way there. The waiter was very eager to help us select the perfect meal, and the wine...selection was fabulous. The ostrich and the kudu were both delicious and tender, perfect! Altogether the evening was wonderful, a resounding success of a find.More

Very good food, service and staff. Had the rib-eye steak and it was wonderful. The waiter was excellent and very professional and knowledgeable. Prices are good too. I would recommend it as one of the best steakhouses in Joburg. MooMoo in Hatfield is the best...on the other side of the boerewors curtain.More

Had a light lunch here. First class staff, friendly and knowledgeable about what was on offer. Attentive to detail. Salads fresh, very fresh and the two hamburgers were first class. Good value for money, easy parking, clearly signposted - for overseas visitors, as I have...know doubt locals would know how to get here. All in all a lovely experience. Thanks due to the charming owner!More

Chaplin’s Grill is a little gem of an eatery located right on the fringe of Sandton. Great ambiance, excellent Jazz lounge music, great service and superb food. It’s not everyday that an owner of a fine establishment such as this, himself checks in on you...to make some small talk and ensure that you’re enjoying the dining experience. Great restaurant, definitely on my list of regulars!More

This is rather difficult to review. I hadn't been to Chaplin's in a while but, after the dining experience we had yesterday evening, I remembered why I hadn't been back in some time. After this particular experience, I probably won't be back again. I made...the mistake of not sending the food back and of not answering at all when asked how my food was, leaving it to my partner to nod away. Perhaps I was still trying to digest what lay before my eyes and did not know how to react at that specific moment. It was only after the fact that I realised the experience was very poor. I must say upfront that the service was impeccable. Pity about the food and the overall dining experience, especially when one looks at the pricing and compares it to other establishments in the vacinity, like Café del Sol, The Local Grill and Wombles - although all these other eateries are in a completely different league. A Vichy soup (as they call it) is, what we thought, a French-inspired soup that is usually thick and incredibly creamy - almost like a thin, creamy, buttery potato and leek puree. This one was incredibly bland. Flavourless, with seemingly no cream other than the miniscule blob that was added in the middle. No amount of microgreens that adjourned the plate could rescue this soup. I ate it rather reluctantly because it was still quite edible, but I wasn't overly excited. Also, bread was brought out with the starters and we didn't know whether this was for the soup or the usual pre-dinner snack. On looking at other tables, we realised that they may have forgotten to serve us the bread before the starters, and chose to instead send it out with the starters. Oh dear. What I expected to be a creamy Vichy soup, turned out to be almost broth-like. And, my goodness - "First Choice" butter. No no no. Even Wimpy serves Lurpak. Rather just serve butter on the side, out of the packaging. The quality of the mains was disappointing for me, although my partner thoroughly enjoyed the lamb shank, but commented that it was more mash than anything else. Portions were also disappointing. R250 for a 250g rib-eye steak (asked for medium, got a rather chewy steak which should have been sent back), a few cremated, over-cooked fries, and a sauce. I must admit that I expected a creamy sauce at that price but, alas, the sauce was a congealed flour-ridden mass with little or no cream. The kind you buy ready-made in a sachet. The vegetables we ordered on the side (at R39) and which we thought we would share, were barely enough for one, and were sub-standard to put it mildly. Watery. Tasteless. Blah. It was as if they had been frozen and reheated. I wouldn't dare serve anything like this to a guest in my home. What further frustrated us was that the mains were brought out almost immediately after the starter plates were collected. We weren't asked if we were ready for mains yet and, to serve this literally a minute or two after the starters, was rather unprofessional. If we really wanted to be difficult, we could have sent everything back. In fact, we probably should have. The Crêpes Suzette, which we shared, were the strangest version we had ever tasted. The sauce, which is usually a bright orange, buttery, clear syrup, was cloudy and lemon-like, with a peculiar after-taste. Certainly not orange. Certainly not Suzette. I was further stunned to be served wine by the glass without it being poured at the table from the actual bottle. It's unprofessional and rather slack for this kind of establishment. With a heavy heart, we left rather deflated.More
