Back in the day, one never really trusted a sushi place that wasn’t on the coast, the perception being that you had to be near the ocean to be able to serve up fish fresh enough for sushi. Yama Sushi stands that notion on its head.
My kids took me here for a birthday dinner and we had a great time. We worked through a range of appetizers and sushi, and my son had the tonkatsu. Yama Sushi had a very good selection of nigiri sushi, along with an extensive roster of maki zushi, some traditional, others not so much. Everything was prepared with a proper ratio of rice to fish. The chefs are masters of their craft.
Yama Sushi hit the trifecta of good food, good service (thanks for taking good care of us, Peggy!) and reasonable prices. Definitely worth a repeat visit next time I’m out that way.

Great food and service! Highly recommend stopping here for lunch! Staff was so nice and the food was fresh, hot and served quickly.

Yama Sushi is wonderful and one of the best Sushi places in Phoenix. This restaurant is now fully open, so if you're interested in going out to eat you can consider this place.

I had the Rainbow Roll and the Gyoza delivered for lunch. Both were very good! I would order sushi from Yams again.

Very cool Japanese eatery! The dining area is quaint, the sushi bar inviting. It looked super clean. My daughter and l both opted for the Fisherman's plate, an assorted nigiri, sashimi and sushi dish. It was excellent and plentiful. I also ordered a miso soup, she had a side of sushi grade rice and ordered a hot tea. Total bill $30, plus a $5 tip. We will be back, l highly recommend!

Four of us visiting from Minnesota just had a fantastic sushi meal at Yama. The food was fresh, creative and meticulously prepared. The service was as great as the meal. The wait staff was attentive and the manager (who I assume was the owner) Came to check on us during the meal as well as at the conclusion.
The spot is well light and contemporary - serving a wide variety of items I have not seen at other like restaurants.
We couldn’t have been more pleased and wanted make sure I posted a review to recognize our great experience.
Thanks to Yama’s staff for a great night!! We are already looking forward to our next visit.

As you can see from the pictures, there was a lot of appetizers and 1 entree. Despite me telling our waitress three times, yes, 3 times that I was still waiting for my entree, she failed to bring it. She went to the sushi chef and asked where it was. He said he never received it. She checked our order and she forgot to put it in. Despite me telling her three times.
She apologized and left the check. I paid and we left.
I won’t be back. Food was good, but terrible service and even worse customer experience.
Don’t recommend.
