The Fat mermaid sits on the waterfront with a great view of the harbor and mountains. Our culinary team loves preparing Alaska's best seafood, great pizzas, burgers, sandwiches of all kinds and awesome salads. Our breads are all made in house including our hamburger buns. If you are in for breakfast, ask about Mom's toast, you will be glad you did. We also produce gluten free items, raw food items and plant based dishes. There is something for everyone. Our bar hosts spirits and 25 different craft beers on tap. You will love our outdoor seating and our rustic garden room. We have a great team ready and waiting to serve you!

King Crab dinner

We went to the fat mermaid for our 50th wedding anniversary and decided to treat ourselves to a king crab dinner. The menu said the serving size would be 14 to 17 ounces . I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to eat all of it! It came with butter and a salad OR French fries. Ordered the salad thinking the crab would fill us up . When the crab came out it was an extremely small leg. We left hungry! Probably 8 ounces or less. $110.00:per serving was a rip off! Thought the legs would be huge.. With such a small portion we should have been at least given a salad, potatoes and a vegetable. The flavor of the crab was AMAZING…just so disappointed with the portion size.

Healthy,tasty food

I had the Buddha bowl with chicken and my husband had the spicy Thai bowl with shrimp. Both were loaded with healthy additions and were quite tasty. You can even get cocktails here. Service was friendly and fast. You can eat outside in their tent and the view is pretty nice.

Good but expensive

They have an extensive menu. The server was very good. My Partner had the pizza I recommend they rename "heart attack on crust"! He really liked the combination of toppings as well as the crust. I had a fresh fish meal and the fish was perfectly cooked.

I had read reviews to choose restaurants for our visit to Alaska. Always ask locals for recommendations before final choice and front desk hostess recommended so knew we would have a good meal. I ordered the Alaskan Smoked Salmon pizza and was not disappointed. Service was good and there was a crowd! Just a cute, local place that was fun to visit! Had live music that was enjoyable during the meal.

We had a nice lunch here. Good, attentive service and nice ambience outside. However, the food quality and taste in conjunction with the cost necessitates a lower rating. I had a very good Reuben sandwich with fries. That cost 18.99 + .99 for a tiny side of barbecue sauce for my fries. My husband's barbecue sandwich was good, nothing special, but cost 17.99. There are a few other cute spots (especially the Potato) in Valdez that have excellent food at considerably more reasonable prices.

Had lunch here. Chose the Fish and Chips. It was a beautiful day and nice to sit outside. The fish and Chips was OK really nothing special and at $35 per dish it should have been more than OK.

I'm not understanding Trip Advisor's algorithm, which gives this an overall rating above much better, and well-rated food options in the area. Long story short, go to one of the food carts down the street. The food tastes much better for a lower price. The food here is fine, just not anything special.

Disappointing Experience at a Highly Rated Restaurant in Valdez

Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to try the pizza and local beer that had been mentioned in earlier reviews. The restaurant was a little busy,but there was no wait for a table. The wait staff was extremely friendly, but not very attentive during our visit. Our poor experience began with some badly burned cheesy bread (see picture) and a long wait for our beer. The pizza was good , although it wasn’t warm throughout, it was much better reheated in our air fryer the next day. The waiter did have them remove the cheesy bread from our bill , which was greatly appreciated. As far as the location and ambiance, the restaurant is well decorated with a great location overlooking the docks. The poor rating is related to the apparent lack of quality assurance on behalf of the waiter, management, and chef along with the long delays for services. I might try this place again, but only after seeing a large number of better reviews.

8 of us had breakfast here 2 days ago. While they only had one server and we were not the largest group there, service was pretty fast and very friendly. The chef also pretty organized as all our food came out relatively quickly, was hot and most importantly delicious. I had the salmon eggs Benedict on rye. Excellent. I wish we could have gone back for dinner as they had several Asian entrees such as Yellow Curry, Pad Thai, and a Korean beef bowl. They do not take reservations though so our tour company would not use for dinner.

Top-two restaurant in Valdez

Solid food, not amazing by any stretch, and very very expensive even by Alaska standards. I've eaten at the Fat Mermaid a few times now, for both lunch and dinner. The menu is a mix of local seafood (mostly battered and deep-fried; order the grilled version for a slightly healthier option), thick pizzas and the usual bar fare (burgers, wings, fries, etc). The beer selection is good and favors local brews. Prepare for mains to cost in the region of $25-35 (spring 2023 prices). If you want a cheaper and (IMHO) tastier (definitely healthier) option, eat at Fu Kung, which is right next door (I give it 4 stars instead of the 3 stars for Fat Mermaid).

Red Salmon Basket

Both of us had the Red Salmon Basket and it was excellent. The salmon was nicely grilled and it was a good size, the fries were also good. Service was also excellent! We would highly recommend trying this if your looking for a good, local salmon dish in a relaxed atmosphere.

Great service, fried cod should be house made.

Huge seafood platter. Some items really good. The fried cod was disappointing as it seemed to be frozen precoated cod with a thin coating of batter. Pricey. Serving freshly battered cod from the area would make a huge difference. Staff was great. Woman server from Kazakstan was exceptional and lovely person.

Tourist Trap

Expensive and mediocre food. Typical tourist trap. The pizza was above average but that’s about it. I had the $21 Buddha Bowl and it was just cold quinoa with chopped veggies drenched in bland, overly sweet sesame sauce. I could have made a better version at home for $10. I wouldn’t go back.

Excellent Valdez Restaurant

Restaurant is probably one of the best in Valdez. Conveniently located in the small town, with ample parking within easy walking distance. The restaurant has lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Food was very good, but the service, although friendly, was a little slow. Likely because the place was so very crowded on the night we went. There were quite a number of menu options, and all looked, and sounded, quite good. We all had fish meals, and the meals were all very tasty and served hot.

I am a local and this is my favorite spot. As I finished my veggie Rueben last week I overheard the group at the next table raving about the awesome menu and great food. The consensus was that they could eat there for every meal during their stay in Valdez and be happy. I agree. It's just really good food.
