We were visiting Timaru for a family wedding and had dinner with friends at The Ale House, had never been before. Staff were welcoming and friendly, food selection was great, wait service was excellent. My husband and a friend had the Seafood Chowder which was absolutely lovely, I had a Gumbo which I really enjoyed, these were entree/starter size dishes... More

A group of us wanted to meet up, (some from the North Island), so we chose Speights Ale House. They were very busy, but I was asked as soon as I walked in the door for help (as I was on my own). They directed me to my party and the service from our host was quick, efficient and friendly.... More

We went for lunch after being referred by plenty and was truly disappointed in the food and service.... After returning a overly spicy prawn dish made up of frozen prawn cutlets, chilli (too much) and tinned tomato we still paid full price for our lunch even though i had one or two bites. We wont be back

We booked a meal for 9 adults then changed the time & added a toddler. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Our meals were all delicious & service was great. It's a really lovely place to go- especially sitting near the massive fire on a rainy night.

This is a good place to have a "pub lunch" the food is well prepared. If you have the need for casual dining in a bar setting then this is a good place for you. It can get busy around traditional eating times, so if you are not after a quite dining experience try this place.

Food was great, lots to choose from and reasonably priced. The Parmesan Fries were amazing! Staff were polite and our meals were served in an acceptable amount of time.

Dined here and wish we hadn't. High prices for very mediocre fare. Overcooked fish with mass produced crumb. A real disappointment as the location is special.
