We have visited Homer several times over the past years but the last time was in 2018 when we dined here. I wrote a rove review with an excellent rating. Last time, I had ordered scallops and thought they were delicious but last night I...was hungry for their 8 oz. prime sirloin with mashed potatoes and broccolini. We are from the Midwest and I am very particular about the quality of my steak and how it is prepared. In fact, I reluctantly order steak because I am usually disappointed but that was not the case at AJ's! My medium cooked steak was tender and cooked exactly how I like it. I was concerned I wouldn't like the peppercorn gravy but it was delicious with the mashed potatoes. Four years ago, my husband thoroughly enjoyed the cowboy burger and once again it was his favorite burger. Usually, restaurants aren't always consistent with their meals but AJ's is a gem of a restaurant. Don't ever change!!More

Everyone we met in Homer recommended AJ's so we thought we would try it! I ordered a filet mignon and my husband had the rockfish-the food was fabulous! It was fresh and beautifully displayed-excellent service and we chatted with Darrell the manager. You do need...reservations for AJ's. So great we went back two days later and the food was great again. Don't miss this amazing restaurant!More

Excellent food in a relaxed atmosphere. Staff very welcoming and friendly. This seems like the place the locals would go. Enjoyed Halibut fish & chips….

We would have liked a reservation for 6 people but waited too long and could only get a reservation for 2 of us. Food and service were outstanding! I had the halibut dinner, best halibut I have ever eaten! My husband had prime rib, he...commented it was very good and kept raving about the mashed potatoes! Lauren was our server, had only worked there a short time, and was wonderful! She recommended the crème brûlée for dessert. Yum, she was certainly right! If we would have been in Homer longer we would have gone back to try other menu options and ask for Lauren again!More

This is a pleasant venue well away from the spit. You need a reservation to avoid disappointment. The host was very pleasant and the service was professional. My wife had the prime rib and I had the ribeye both served with mash potato and grilled...zucchini. Both meals were very tasty and the meat was cooked to perfection. The only downside is the price - $49 is quite steep, given the £-$ exchange rate but we would recommend!More

We were warned to book in advance but that the food would be worth it. Both pieces of advice were on the money. The halibut was excellent, the waitress was competent and friendly, but to wait over an hour for the food to arrive was...too long. Then, to make matters worse, the owner, or manager of the restaurant decided to give us a lecture about waiting times. A simple “I‘m sorry about the wait, the kitchen is busy“ would have been perfectly acceptable. To tell us, however, that there is a sign posted in the entrance warning customers to expect up to 90 minutes wait is just poor commercial sense. I’m not a strong believer in “the customer is always right“, but I do believe that the customer doesn‘t need to be treated like an idiot. If the Front of House could work a little on her social skills, this review would have been a five. Until then, I‘m afraid it‘s just a three.More

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely evening dining at AJs steakhouse. You need a reservation as they book up. Everything was top notch from the cocktails to the service and food. Our server recommended the Bue Cheese fondue potato chip appetizer and it was...delicious! I ordered a filet and my husband ordered the seared Halibut both were cooked to perfection. It was our best dining experience during our Alaska trip by far.More

I recommend you make a reservation as this place is popular with both tourists and locals. We walked in the door and were greeted by the host Darrel. He was both gracious and funny. As the tables had all been reserved for the evening we...sat at the bar. I must say we were grateful for the comfy cushion backed chairs. The bartender Carolyn (I assume that’s her title) was delightful and also made sure people had a glass on the go, regardless if it was water or a bevy. Our server Cathryn was fast and efficient and was very knowledgeable. She put up with our bad jokes and had a quick smile. One thing I have learned on our trips is staff can make a huge difference in an experience. We were so glad we sat at the bar as we had so many great conversations, we listened and shared stories with other travellers. Our favourite meal in the region! Oh I guess I should mention our steaks were melt in your mouth and the rock cod soup was so good!More

Does this look like a $75 meal to you? I would give the steak a 7 out of 10, it is USDA prime, but we are not talking Wagyu beef here! The scallops must have been poached in plain water. There was absolutely no flavor...to them. I would give them a 2 as barely edible. No bread, no salad, no soup - $75!More

This restaurant was unexpectedly really good!! We were lucky to get a bar seat because this place gets packed. Fish and Chips were excellent- fresh and clean tasting. Halibut with mashed potatoes and buttered squash was amazingly delicious! Lots of complexity and very fresh -...superbly cooked and executed on. Wine and beer was delicious. Desert was tasty. Overall a very enjoyable meal and highly recommend. Cons: you have to wait at least an hour for your entree so be prepared and get some appetizers or fish and chips to hold you over. It is also pretty expensive but quality comes with that.More

I love this place! Such a local "Alaskan" authentic vibe - many locals eating here, many families, a few tourists. We were staying a few nights at the Aspen Hotel, a short walk away, and came here for dinner, so glad we did. AJ's location...is great, right in the heart of Old Town, many cool shops in the neighborhood, just off Bishops Beach. We did not have a reservation, which we knew was risky, but we thought we would take our chances. We got lucky and got a table but we were told that the wait was very long - we were fine with that and just asked to keep the wine and "Old Town Ritas" flowing - the drinks along with the amazing appetizer we ordered, made us not care about the wait at all. The appetizer, wow, if you like bleu cheese, is a must - fresh house made potato chips with a bleu cheese sauce and chunks of bleu cheese, fantastic! Not low calorie, but hey, it's a treat! We also had the cowboy burger and the Caesar salad with grilled local halibut. Excellent and friendly service.More

These Iowans were pleased with the beef at AJ’s! Would have been a five, but it was a 2+ hour experience even with a late reservation. New York strip, chicken Alfredo, rockfish dinner and a beef filet. AJ’s did a great job. The place is...in Old Town and has been in Homer for years. Lots of locals. We do recommend if some in your family are not fish eaters or have had their fill of salmon and halibut. Since it was an hour wait after we ordered, a couple of us walked down to the beach as a bonus.More
