A Hidden Jewel

Tommy is personable, articulate and best of all a fantastic chef. He rightly boasts of his Bohemian enclave. Go soon, the building is under new ownership with designs of replacing the property with an 8 story monolith. Started with squash soup. No dairy, just seasoned, perfectly. Entraie was... read more

We were in downtown San Jose and were looking for a decent lunch. After checking reviews for nearby places, we settled on La Bastille. We were greeted by the chef/owner who was kind enough to make a suggestion of quiche with a side salad where it was the most economical choice (the restaurant is a bit pricey and we looked... More

The walls are covered with dubious paintings... the menu differs slightly depending on mood and availability of ingredients... the main waiter is a local version of Manuel in Fawlty Towers and the owner/chef has definitely been inspired by Basil... The food is french/swiss, the wine list is broader (ask if anything has recently come in that may not be listed),... More

We just got back to our hotel after spending an evening at La Bastille. Tomy was an excellent host. The food was wonderful and plentiful. It was great to find a quiet oasis with great classic music playing in the middle of downtown. Whenever we are back to San Jose we will surely come here again!

Lovely lunch. We stated with soup, then a puff pastry quiche with a fresh salad as well as schnitzel with crispy potato wedges and finished with espresso and chocolate mousse. Elegant European fare in a relaxed atmosphere. Under a 10 minute walk from the Park Inn.

I had a fantastic dinner here with friends. The owner and chef Thomy is happy to make suggestions and great job making a memorable meal. Favorites were the Swiss chocolate mousse and the rock bass. Restaurant La Bastille is not to be missed if you're in San Jose.

We really enjoyed our dinner The owner is very friendly and involved. We felt very welcome, and he was happy to tailor our meal to us personally. We would certainly recommend. it is not very fancy, but it was very good. I had not seen downtown San Jose, so we were able to take a nominal taxi detour after leaving... More

I usually to take the time to write reviews, but my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner last night. The cuisine is part French with escargots, pate-maison, potatoes gratin, part Swiss with cheese fondue, Burgundy fondue, and part German with Schnitzel, Bratwurst. The owner and chef Tommy prepares everything himself. The atmosphere is quiet and the setting romantic (white... More

Gem of a restaurant and owner! He stayed open an hour late for us to come have lunch. We took a car in from the San Jose airport on our last day from being in Quepos / Uvita. The owner was from Switzerland and then Greece and had wonderful stories to tell. I have travelled to Zurich and Basel a... More

I'm on vacation with my 8 year old daughter. Each day we go to a new restaurant. La Bastille had very good ratings, and the owner/chef, Tommy, has a great reputation. And after our dinner there today, I can say his reputation is well deserved. He's a colorful character, who charmed both my daughter and me. My daughter has dietary... More
