We were staying nearby and were looking for a good viewpoint for the sunset. We arrived around 5pm and were able to get one of the prime tables at the edge of the seating area (the rest of those tables filled up soon after we...arrived, so plan accordingly). It was happy hour, so we enjoyed some drinks for a while, then ordered some dinner later on. Very casual vibe, and never felt rushed at all which was nice. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!More

Barba Roja definitely caters to tourists. Pirate decorations abound and the prices are higher than they should be. Very kitschy. We were definitely wary when the food came out, but it was actually really good. We ordered from the bar menu instead of the standard...menu - the prices were better and the menu is a confusing mess of different flavors and styles - and the tacos and ceviche we received were top-notch. We also had a pretty good pitcher of sangria for about 13 bucks which felt like a great deal. The best part was the tres leches for dessert. I had never had it before and it blew my mind - So good. I can see how others may be disappointed with the confusing menu, but it's hard to knock when we had such good food. The view is also very good.More

Staff were kind and welcoming, cute restaurant cat. Steak dish was good however it was listed as a rib eye and the steak was definitely not a rib eye. It tasted ok and the sides were nice but the owner should realise their meat provider...is not providing them with good quality meat / the correct cuts. This is a good restaurant for very casual dining. No sushi on dinner menu.More

We hang out here every time we are in MA. The view can’t be beat (except from our rented villa - which is next door)! The food is delicious and the drinks are strong. The staff is friendly and the Spots the cat just add...to the ambiance.More

Enjoyed happy hour (2-for-1) drinks and an order of nachos (that was enough to serve as a meal for 2) and sunset views at Barba Roja. Our plan was to just enjoy an app with sunset views and then go elsewhere for dinner, but by...the time we finished the nachos, we were completely full. Great view, relaxed vibe, and reasonable prices: less than $20 for 2 mojitos and a big bowl of nachos, (including the tax, service charge and additional tip).More

After reading several great reviews and our AirBnB host also recommending this place we went for dinner.... boy we were disappointed! Service was VERY slow despite there being at least 3 staff working tables (we were one of 5 total tables in the place!). The...food was pricey for what you got which was bland and not very appetizing. I got the coconut shrimp which was ok. The shrimp it’s self was good, but the magi sauce was strange, mash potatoes seemed like the were instant potatoes and the steamed vegetables were pale and soggy. My daughter has the season fish with shrimp sauce- the fish was dry, the sauce was spicy and peppery. I told the staff that and they said “sorry”...but that was it. I ordered her something else which was ok. They still charged us for her fish dish. Also got the tres leches cake since it was the only dessert they had despite there being several listed on the menu. The cake was ok but there was a VERY strong rum flavor in it! So beware! I couldn’t finish it. So overall disappointing.More

Got some amazing picts of the sunset there while having happy hour. Drinks were buy one get one free. The Guaro Sours came with a pink sugar rim and it was soooo good. To the lady below who complained about a cat trying to steal...her food, you shouldn't be in CR then. There are cats and dogs ALL OVER CR. Lol That horrible little ruffian 🤣🤣🤣 Great place! We will be back!More

A local friend suggested we go to Barba Roja for a burger or, if we wanted to try Costa Rican food, chifrijo. According to him, their smoked pork made the dish. While I have no point of comparison, it certainly was delicious especially coupled with...the house hot sauce. Tried a guaro sour for the first time, too. Waiter brought me two. Apparently he decided happy hour should start an hour earlier than advertised. A delicious accident. (Had this elsewhere later and I definitely preferred it from Barba Roja.)More

The only good thing is the sunset view. The food was cold, flavorless and low quality. The service even worse! Many other places with a view. Wish we would have checked another for our last night!

Most of the tables have a great view, and there is a bar with a full view you could wait if they don't take reservations.
