About
A CONTEMPORARY TUSCALOOSA RESTAURANT The Side By Side is a contemporary, high-energy restaurant created by Chef Chris Hastings, winner of the 2012 James Beard Award, chef and co-owners of Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, Alabama. The name is partially based around his old and beloved 28-gauge shotgun, a side-by-side. "I've always been an avid outdoors man, a hunter and fisherman, all my life," he said. While searching for a name, Hastings was asked: What will tie this restaurant to you? "But it's also about the restaurant being attached, side-by-side with the hotel, and people sitting down together. ... There are a lot of metaphorical opportunities there." And it's just The Side By Side.

Very good service, atmosphere and food. Shrimp and grits and chocolate soufflé are excellent. Highly recommended.

We ate here as a suggestion from another reviewer. It was not our favorite by no means. The dinner menu was limited. It offered a variety of meat from quail to rabbit, but did not offer any type of pasta, chicken other than potato dumplings,...More

Fireplace out front. In the Embassy Suites downtown this restaurant is a great gathering spot for groups after work for a cocktail and great appetizers. Heavy menu and also chef specialties. Chris Hastings designed the original menu. There is something for everyone.

Our 5 family members had a very nice lunch here. We sat in a large comfortable booth. The room was attractive and conducive to having a conversation. The food was very good with the biggest hit being the shrimp and grits. Everything was good. Our...More

We had a very nice meal, it was my birthday and we had booked from Australia. All the staff made a fuss - even signed a birthday card, and provided a complementary dessert. The service was very good, knowledgable and attentive, and the atmosphere was...More

I've been to all of Chris Hastings restaurants. Given the opportunity to be in Tuscaloosa, I was excited to try SIde by SIde. It turned out to be a real disappointment. Uneducated staff, poorly prepared food...definitely NOT up to the Chris Hastings standard. We ordered...More

Often neglected, because of the other places around it, Side by Side puts out consistent, usually good food. Some things miss a little. But, I've been coming here for over 2 years when I stay at the Embassy Suites and it is consistently good.

Almost the only place open on New Years Day. It was fine-huge servings and good service but lots of heavy fried dishes.

My wife and I have eaten here several times. The first experience was very mediocre. The next few times have been nothing but delightful. This restaurant manages to have some unique flavors, good execution on the cookery, and solid service as well. If you are...More
