Located in an old mansion in the French concession, this venue provides a fine dining restaurant with amazing Spanish dishes. The attention to detail with the house smoked salmon delivered to your table and pouring of the cool liquid for the gazpacho before your eyes. Enjoyed the chef's modern take on Potatas Bravas, and the rich pork cheek in jus.... More

Friends took me to this place. My two years of dining experiences in Shanghai can be summed up as - "nothing on the menu is matched by the food that turns up on the plate". On top of that you can bet that one in three choices are not available. Not the case here as all menu items were tried... More

The staff was very friendly at first. The wine and food is pricey. The cheapest bottle of wine was 278RMB. We went to the tapas and wine bar. I thought tapas were nice little nibbles at really good, reasonable prices, but the tapas were not affordable. Decor was great. We just decided to do the cheapest and get out of... More

Went for their paella brunch, the WeChat ad said 198 for tapas, paella and wines included. When we ordered it seemed the deal had "changed" ... Friendliness of service was the only good point. The tapas were not good at all (first plate was mixed salad, 1 plate for 3 people), paella was ok. We ordered Sangria which turned out... More

Sum Up: El Patio delivers good Spanish food on overstretched prices in a nice but not stylish environment. Too pricey for being an recommendation... The bill: 700 RMB / person with wine The food: Croques Jambon - very nice Spicey Potatoes Bravas - nice Cood with bell peppers - surprisingly good Cheeks in red wine sauce - nice Paella Valencia... I often eat here if I am craving some well-prepared Spanish food and wine. I enjoy the ambience of the restaurant, with low lighting and plenty of windows facing the gardens. I've always found the staff to be very friendly and attentive and mosts of them are multi-lingual. There is a great Spanish wine list. They also let you bring... More

This attractively renovated building does indeed have a garden patio, with a ground floor dining room, an upstairs bar, and a rooftop whiskey bar. Serious chef, well-trained service, innovative menu choices include Spanish meat and fish dishes, creative desserts and an excellent wine list make it a pleasant choice. We've been there several times for lunch or dinner and always... More

This is an excellent Spanish steakhouse in the heart of the old French Concession. The restaurant is in a stand alone house hidden amongst beautiful tree lined streets, with whiskey bars on three floors. The tapas are passable. The best food is what can be grilled: Steak, chops, calamari. And did I mention the whiskey bar? A great place to... More

Fun section of the French Concession area and was excited to have some tapas, and the ambiance was right up our alley, However, other than the tomato bread and cut meats, the rest of the food was not good. The fish served was very "fishy" and over cooked, The veggie dishes were not better. The capper is the wine selection... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
