Was a little bit of a challenge to find. Then when we did it was closed contrary to website information. Appeared to be no explanation for the closure.

Brother Melvin Rogers, Jr. was born April 11, 1947, in Limestone County, AL, to the late Melvin Rogers, Sr. and the late Parlee Cheatom Rogers. He was called to Glory to be with the Lord on October 28, 2019. He was preceded in death by...his son Jason Terrell (“JT”) Rogers, his daughter Monica Smith, his granddaughter Daizee Jru Rogers, his brother Clayton Rogers, and his brother Herman Rogers. He accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Reverend Pearl Dancy and joined New Hope C.P.C.A. in Madison, AL. He could often be seen traveling with his brothers as the leader of the singing group”The Rogers Brothers”. He was a student at Trinity High School. He then went on to become an entrepreneur. He owned and operated Melvin’s Auto Repair for many years. As he tells it, he started “dabbling” in BBQ sauce and figured that his sauce was so good he should open a barbecue restaurant. He went from motor oil to cooking oil! He opened Melvin’s Place of BBQ in Huntsville, AL and it quickly became one of the best barbecue places in town. In fact, He was in the top ten of BBQ legends in North Alabama. He was kind, wise, warm hearted, and philanthropic. He didn’t mind feeding his fellow man that was less fortunate. He also didn’t mind telling it like it is. He had so much wisdom and he shared that wisdom with anyone he encountered. When he talked, people listened! He made a cameo appearance in the movie “Constantine” which was filmed here in Huntsville, AL and showcased him at his club “Melvin’s Place”. He was known for bringing world renowned gospel groups to town such as Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s and the Canton Spirituals. He put on several Blues shows which brought out the likes of Tyrone Davis and Bobby Blue Bland. He had a passion for racing (which trickled down to his sons) and loved racing his car, “Cool Blue of Triana”. He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife, Gladys Rogers. Four sons, Marvin “Frogg” Rogers (Tessa) of Grant, AL, Mark “Tony” Rogers (April) of Triana, AL, Orlando Yarbrough of Florida, and Chris Cross of Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. One daughter, Raven Brooks (Brandon) of Harvest, AL. Five brothers, Elder Henry Rogers of Madison, AL. David Rogers (Mary) of Triana, AL, Norman Rogers (Valerie) of Madison, AL, Otis Rogers of Madison, AL, and Deacon Calvin Rogers (Sara) of Madison, AL. Five sisters, Elder Lela Parham of Madison, AL, Maevene Rogers of Triana, AL, Cora Hobbs (Deacon Moses) of Huntsville, AL, Catherine Townsend (Henry) of Huntsville, AL, and Rose Nance of Birmingham, AL. Two sisters-in-law, Alma Dozier (Albert) of Huntsville, AL and Glenda Draper of Huntsville, AL. Four brothers-in-law, Floyd Hawk of Meridianville, AL, Harold Hawk of Meridianville, AL, Roosevelt Hawk (Shirley) of Harvest, AL, and Tony Hawk (Angela) of Fayetteville, TN. Ten grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.More

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life and have always thought we had the very best BBQ. Since Harold’s BBQ in Abilene closed down, the best BBQ I have found has been down in the Lockhart/Luling area. While visiting family in Huntsville, I ran by...Melvin’s to pick up a rack of ribs to take back and serve with sides that we had already prepared. Melvin made me try a bite before he would let me leave. They beat anything I have ever had! When I get back home, I am hoping that the desire to “slap my Mama” has subsided. Melvin’s homemade sauce is out of this world!More

As others have said - this is BBQ in a guy's driveway. This Gentleman is only open until 5pm - so try to get there early. You walk in - you get a few choices of what he has that day. It's good food. Maybe...not the best BBQ I've had - but it's good. His beans by the way are awesome. But Melvin - Melvin is an amazing man. This guy has lived his life to the fullest. If he's not too busy - talk to him - what an incredible guy. Started out after college driving race cars. Used to build the cages himself. Reminisced with me about his '67 Camaro. After racing - taught himself to read music so he could play Blues Guitar in the bars. This guy has some stories. A real pleasure to meet. I got there at 3:30 pm. No one else around. I lucked out - got a nice late lunch and then got to talk to the man himself. So glad I read these reviews and went.More

I came to Melvin’s expecting good barbecue. The rib plate I had was fantastic!! I met Melvin as he was talking with friends when I entered. He immediately stopped what he was doing and made a plate of Ribs, beans, and potato salad. Coming from...an area where BBQ is great, Melvin‘s was a fantastic experience and an excellent meal.More

It's a few picnic tables in the yard. Melvin comes out, welcomes us, asks what we want. Menu? Nah. Chicken, ribs or pork. Sides? Good potato salad and beans. No choices. Ribs were very good. Could have used more sauce; ask for hot sauce. It's...what I think of when I think of a rib shack, but there's no shack.More

The menu apparently varies, but it is barbecue. We had ribs (tender and flavorful) pork plate (chopped pork) pork sandwich (white bread). Plates include potato salad and beans (both great). The food was all great. The place is a house and you order at the...end of the driveway. What is on the menu, who knows. How much does it cost, that seems random. Overall great experience.More

The location is tucked away in the neighborhood. It is not at restaurant - more like visiting a family friend. Excellent sauce and very fair price

I felt like i had been invited to dinner at someone's home. We ordered pulled pork and smoked chicken plates that came with potato salad and beans. The pulled pork was outstanding, but the smoked chicken quarter was the best we've ever had at a...BBQ place. The meat was falling apart tender and so juicy. Melvin says he makes everything himself - even the lemon and chocolate cake slices he brought us as a surprise. We ate there at a table under a tent on a beautiful Fall day and could not have been happier with the food or the company. Definitely give this place a chance.More
