Had a really satisfying dinner here with some friends celebrating a birthday!!! Love the atmosphere, its just a neat little restaurant! Started with the gumbo which had a good flavor. Needed some more stuff (chicken, sausage, seafood), had too many veggies. It was more of...a veggi gunbo. My main was crab florientine and the fresh fish that day was the red fish (yum). I was very impressed it was good dinner. The hollandaise sauce was very rich, needed less of that. The spinach mixed in the grits was heavy handed as well. I like spinach it was just a too much for the amount of grits. Overall it was a great dinner meal. Would highly recommend it.More

We came to Simp McGhees at the suggestion of The Doubletree . We enjoyed the original features in the building in the historic downtown of Decatur. We had the gumbo , the generous port chop, and the crab cakes . Wine was a generous pour...and high quality . We recommend this place ; the staffing level is generous , and our waitstaff were courteous , efficient, and welcoming . We would come again.More

I was not impressed. I ordered the Pontchartrain and it was ok at best. Fish was bland and dry. Shrimp that comes on top was over cooked and hard. Definitely not good enough for the price I paid. Service was terrible as I was left...with an empty glass all night and had to keep flagging someone other than my waiter down to get a refill. The only positive was the spit fire shrimp which is the same thing as bang bang shirimp from Bonefish. Highly doubt I will be backtMore

Enjoyed the food. Wine selection was decent. Server at the bar seemed to be new possibly as she got some of our orders wrong, but was friendly. Steak au poivre was great! Charcuterie board also had cheese which made it even better! Atmosphere was fun...on a Sat night!More

This place is cool. But our server made little eye contact and was not comfortable doing their job. Menu choices are creative. Craft cocktails are mostly ice.

The place has a quaint pleasant atmosphere. The food is great. Appetizer and entree alike. The steak is very good here and I like their unique tastes. Service was excellent.

Two of us dined here early evening. We were shown to a table downstairs as upstairs was being used for a private party . OK but the private party seemed to severely impact on the speed of service downstairs . Our server was great and...very apologetic about the speed of service giving us a full explanation , however management could make sure the kitchen can cope with the numbers Food the crab cake starters were good though. Great texture and full of flavour The fish - barramundi was excellent . In fact I returned to the restaurant later in the week for a quick re run of the fish but the restaurant was closed at lunchtime !!More

If we lived in Decatur, we would eat here almost every week. Yes it's that good. But we don't and so when we travel south from Nashville, we time the trip so that we can eat at Simp McGhee's. The food is perhaps some of...the most creative cooking you can experience. And if you love seafood there is always something different to sample here, be it amberjack, or as this last time, sheepshead, which turned out to be outstanding. The offerings occasionally are a bit pricey, but waitstaff is very good at telling you the cost each special and what all is offered (We find waiters rarely tell you what the daily specials cost...always have to ask and sometimes it's darnright appalling!). But the food is worth every penny. Use Mom's egg money to buy the best! Cocktails too are outstanding. Try their Sazeracs...they are better than what you find in New Orleans. Another item to mention is that the waitstaff are trained to pace the meal to let you enjoy each course. They don't hover but they do watch and at just the right time bring the next phase of your meal. We notice our same waiters over the years...that's always a good sign. So travelers, vear off I-65 for downtown Decatur and enjoy one of the best meals in the state. We've eaten here perhaps 10 times and have never had less than a 5 star meal!More

Dinner was good, once you got it. Seriously we waited 1+ hours to get our food Friday night. And all we ordered was a grilled chicken sandwich and beef stroganoff from the bar menu. It's ridiculous. Get more kitchen help!
