That chocolate Bismarck is totally awesome. It has both custard and buttercream inside. Also , the custard and buttercream covers the whole inside not just a little spot in the middle and the chocolate on top is soooo good. I would call ahead to have...them save me some because they sell as fast as they hit the shelf.More

See my picture---their chocolate frosted cream filled donut has BOTH buttercream and Bavarian filling!! I had never seen this before. I get the buttercream filled everywhere I go--but this was delicious! I also got an apple fritter for later that day. They do sell out,...it's a small town bakery, but worth stopping in for whatever they have at the time!!More

Exactly what you'd want in a small town business. Locally owned/operated and they make excellent products! They've recently changed ownership, but the quality is still top notch.

My wife and I were there October 16th. The bakery was clean and the owner was very friendly. We were there late in the afternoon and the selection was slim but of course you expect that from a good bakery. I had a glaze doughnut...and coffee and both were fresh. We will definitely be back and come earlier in the day.More

How is it that I have lived here 30 years and never once had a Duchess Donut until now? It’s a truly disdainful situation; when it comes to donuts in Cullman there is only one name synonymous with donuts, and that’s Duchess. This quaint little...bakery doesn’t boast bright flashing neon signs, yet the Saturday morning I arrived there was a line out the door waiting. The orders came rolling in and it wasn’t which donut you wanted, rather it was how many dozens you wanted to walk out with. On this particular trip I managed to snag a dozen hot glazed and chocolate covered donuts. The coating looked more like a frosting than a glaze..but more on that later. Now, I must preface this by saying I was a Krispy Kreme gal all the way, but my world has changed after my first bite of the magic that is a Duchess Donut. The texture was light, not dense, with hardly any chew at all. These were melt in your mouth, dangerously delicious rings of goodness. The glaze wasn’t thick and it coated the entire donut without flaking off. If you can get them hot that is the way to go, but 5-10 seconds in the microwave on a cold one is a close second. The whole box of hot glazed was easily devoured by my children in minutes, then we turned our attention to the chocolate. This isn’t a wimpy chocolate glazed donut; these things are smeared with a thicker, almost frosting-like light chocolate coating which is smooth and creamy and melts in the mouth. I was shocked at the contrast from other large chain donut shops in their traditional glazing methods to this more rustic style, but in the end with side by side comparisons this one won out. My next time visiting I decided to go for the fruit filled donuts and the Bismarks (you might know these as Long John’s elsewhere.) The fruit filled were an assortment of apple, blueberry and strawberry. This was not the overtly sweet pie filling gel you get elsewhere. These actually tasted like someone cared enough to create a compote/jam to nestle in the donut. The apple was one of my favorites because it wasn’t so overcooked that the apple lost its texture. The cinnamon notes were not overdone, they were subtle with the right amount of spice, which I would think would be the perfect fall donut. The strawberry actually tasted like fresh strawberries from the market, with enough pieces of fruit to not be mushy but not so chunky it interfered with the light crumb of the donut. The blueberry was nice and had a little acidity to break through the sweetness of the jelly like filling, which I liked. If you thought that the original donuts were amazing you will have to try the Bismarks. I’m not a huge fan of anything cream filled but these hands down are the best I’ve ever had and I have to rank them right up there as number 1. Not only does it have a cream filling which is fluffy and airy but it’s also doubled up with a thick, creamy custard filling for a combination that eliminates all other filled donuts from the competition. There is no competing with this confection. I ordered mine with the chocolate on top but you can also get them plain. It has the exact texture of their original donut and it seems like the lightness just won’t hold up to the substantial filling. but it does and with such a wonderful contrast of consistencies. There is definitely a reason this is a mainstay for not just the Cullman food scene but the culture and history of Cullman itself. This is one of those places where childhood memories get made and family traditions take hold. So I’m now getting a dozen for a special Saturday morning breakfast for the whole family and I will be taking my children there for years to come.More

I will say that if you get there first thing, the plain glazed doughnuts are hot and really good, but for real, who does not accept debit and credit cards in 2019?! I really don't know a single person who carries cash anymore, so I'm...not sure how they even function. The doughnuts at Daylight Doughnuts are just as good, they have better selection, and they are up with the times and freely accept your plastic.More

I have an employee that frequently brings donuts and baked goods from this bakery for the break room. There is never any left unlike when we get them from Krispy Kreme. I love the chocolate glazed. Such goodness. Can’t wait to make a personal visit...but for now I look forward when they show up in our break roomMore

Their other products are good, but their original glazed donuts are famous in the area for a reason. They were rated Alabama's best donut in August of 2016 by al.com. They don't take debit or credit cards, so have cash ready when you go.

If you like plain yeast donuts and underwhelming Bismarck donuts then have at it but with all the gourmet donuts they have in Burmingham (Heavenly Donuts/Hero Donuts) this place has A LOT to be desired. I even say Daylight donuts is better because they at...least have a variety to choose from.More
