Best restaurant in Ohrid by all measurements!
High quality food— menu varies each season, but they retain some of the top dishes. This is NOT a traditional restaurant, but a more high end place with fusion cuisines. They have home made fish soup, pasta and bread. They Tout in Prison is a pasta classic that you will love. The latest triumph is the starter how we, the Cod Croquette. They are sublime.
Service— is traditionally excellent and charming. A very pleasant experience.
Wine— huge wine list. They have most of the Macedonian wines you must try, and some international wines if you really must have it. Let them advise you… they know their stuff.
The setting— is unique and unbeatable. On the lake, just beneath the most famous church/ image of ohrid. You can have a long walk to the location from the town square or you can hire a boat, about 10 euro.
Prices— are the highest in town. Worth every penny.

We didn't have much joy finding good food in North Macedonia but this was the exception. A beautiful restaurant tucked away in the old town literally on the lakeside. The food and service are exceptional and it is also very reasonably priced.
Over the two nights we ate there, we tried starters of Cod Croquettes with Salsa and mains of Bream with Pecorino, Pork in Mustard and Apple Sauce & Trout in Prison (a pasta dish). Accompanied by various glasses of wine and finished with an excellent but unusual Tarte Tatin, this is a place to be savoured. Both nights came in at around 2800MKD for two (ÂŁ45-50 at the time) so an absolute bargain for this quality.

Set in a tiny village around 10-15 minute walk from the old part of Ohrid (no roads there) the restaurant is right on the water, and lacks the noise and commotion of restaurants in town, though the vibe is lively. We had great service (prompt, knowledgeable) and the food was well prepared and presented. The menu is best described as modern versions of Macedonian recipes. Good local wine list. Good WiFI. Toilet is reasonably clean and well equipped. This is where couples go for that special night out.

We love Ohrid and its ancient history, particularly the iconic St. Kaneo church a symbol of Ohrid and its beauty. Thus, when we saw the picturesque lake side restaurant named Kaneo we were drawn by the setting and ambiance. We went in for coffee and desert but looking over the menu we were excited by the different options, not the usual Macedonian restaurant menu.
We decided to come back for a special occasion dinner. The service was good but the food was SUBSTANDARD.
Our special occasion was ruined by the horrible food! Our server highly recommended and we ordered the “Talliata Rosemary” which is supposed to be northern Italian dish Beef Tagliata (beef tenderloin sliced and served over greens, usually arugula).
What we got was miniature pieces of raw beef with some rosemary sprigs and to finish the dish at the table the server poured a huge amount of hot sizzling oil on top (not even olive oil) and served it over/with nothing! Basically, we got 150gr of raw meat smothered in hot canola oil! It seems something got “lost in translation” from the original Italian recipe.
The other dish we ordered was chicken in sage sauce which ended up being though and difficult to chew chicken breast in a lemon sauce. I think my 10-year granddaughter can make a better version of that dish. For dessert we ordered the cheesecake, which looked like a crumb cake with some jam, I promptly returned it. What a big disappointment!!!
I don’t know if it was a bad night, or the cooks had a night off, but the end result is a big disappointment. Never again….

If you're going to price at the top end, you should try harder. A welcome would be appreciated, not a surly "Yes?!" - as if we're an irritation.
Despite reservations we were told to wait while a walk-in couple was seated first. When we were seated,he table cloth was soiled, and our table, as well as others, periodically surrounded with some ill and mangy cats.
The waiter was friendly but I was surprised to be asked to accept starters and main courses to be served all together (I suppose because they wanted the table back quickly to maximise the evening's profit in peak season).
Grilled shrimps came exactly as described, but with literally nothing else on the plate but 5 shrimps. No garnish at all. No finger bowl or hand cleaning wipes. If the menu claims "Gnocchi with truffles", it should be with truffles, not just a sauce with truffle flavored paste mixed with porcini mushrooms and oil.
Average food, mediocre experience. Overpriced.

The only thing saving this from being a one star review was our waiter Stefan.
We ordered a mixture of starters, including mussels, shrimps and anchovies. The mussels were cold, dry and grey - and still had grit in them. The shrimps were missing the anchovies that the menu said they came with. When the mains came, we had ordered the sole. I don’t even know how to describe how bad the sole was.
It was undercooked, coated in some batter that was soggy and not cooked, so that you could see the flour that coated the fish. It was swimming in butter also. I could not eat any of it. On top of this, it was a frozen piece of fish - despite the restaurant promising fresh fish and being located directly on the lake.
Do not go here to eat, especially as it is not cheap.

The sole I ordered was undercooked. I thought perhaps this is what the chef was hoping for but it was inedible. The dish came in three pieces. I tried to eat the first piece but it was ridiculously drenched in butter. The sole was cooked in a flour batter, so I opened up the other 2 pieces to see if they had been cooked. They were also undercooked so I didn't eat them. The waiter was run off his feet due to a lack of staff. He never came and asked if everything was okay when we tucked into our meal. When the waiter did clear our plates I asked him to ask the chef if they thought the fish was cooked properly, if yes, then I stand corrected. He did ask if I wanted a replacement but I had lost my appetite by then.
I didn't hear anything back from the kitchen about the state of the fish. When I got the bill I asked what the chef thought. His words was they were upset that it was undercooked, but not enough to actually offer a discount or take it off the bill because some had been eaten!

I tried today to eat something in that restaurant. I took the place inside waiting to find free place upon the lake surface. When i have seen two free tables i came to one of them. Than i was told that the place is taken. There were no reservation card or anything and there were two tables free. So i said thank You and left.
I took the look at the card and the prices for main dishes were about 500 denars each, wchich is very very very EXPENSIVE for Macedonia. I ve never seen that kind of prices anywhere in the country. But maybe food is wiorth that price. I didnt have the chance to judge it.
Anyway: AVOID the place, because of the service.

We really liked Kaneo restaurant. This is one of the rare restaurants in Ohrid that offers a creative and sophisticated menu. We ordered fish soup which was excellent and served with bread and Ohridsko makalo. The Smoked Trout with Truffles was excellent! We also tried Trout in Prison and Njoki with Truffles. Everything was amazing!
Service was prompt and impeccable.
The restaurant is on the water and offers stunning views of Ohrid lake. All that for a very reasonable price. We will be back again!

The only restaurant in Ohrid!
You should order:
For two persons, tell them to split 1 portion for two of you (in two plates).
1. Fennel salad
2. Cod croquettes
3. "Agrodolce." shrimps
4. Gundi "Toscani"
5. 250g each Trout "Ala Diavola"
6. Apple tarte tatin with Vanila.
My choice with this food will be: vine Grashvina-Lazar.
It will cost you around 70 euros with the vine.

Location, views and food is exquisite, dining on the crystal clear waters on the lakeside in Ohrid old town, Macedonia.
Kaneo restaurant was a hidden gem, with magical views of St. John the Theologian church and overlooking the lake. We started out with a glass of bubbly, followed by one of our favourite local wines, Bela Voda.
The food, service and wine was exceptional, it was nice to find a fine dining restaurant with clean food, it was delicious.
The steaks were cooked to perfection and high-quality grade, the desserts were also a treat.
Cosy indoor and outdoor dining, the choice is yours, it's a short walk from the centre of the old town, strolling through the beautiful cobble-stone streets.
Perfect restaurant to spend a lazy lunch and soak up the views, you won't be disappointed.

I'd rather say 3.5. All the tables outside had signs reserved. The waiter gave us a separate table 50 cm from another couple, all the rest outside were empty throughout our visit. I believe that this is a deliberate procedure to have the best places for potential rich clients. The food was tasty but not exceptional. One dish was a bit of salty. The view was beautiful. We didn't have to wait too long for the order.

I will be direct and honest here.
Food was creative and simple with perfect execution of dishes. We called it "smart food".
Using local ingredients, not over-complicating them but again presenting them as they are. Meaning, full of flavors and they were rich in texture, and flavor - there was no need to add anything or remove it from the dish. Good balance.
The portions are just right.
We ended everything with deserts, and they just sealed our experience on a super positive note.
Great waiters, who know how to communicate and "behave" in their roles. Nice location on the waterfront.
All in all, we left the place with a huge smile on our faces looking forward to writing this review. I am not doing it often but for me, it was a great way to say;
Thank you.

Completely overrated. The wine was very expensive, the food mediocre and the service completely uninterested. We had a trilogy of starters that were good but expensive compared to the ingredients. Very expensive by Macedonian standards but the craftsmanship and taste were OK. The trout that we had as a main course was grilled far too early in the kitchen and was completely dried out. The timing and communication between the kitchen and the service didn't work at all. We were served the main course immediately after the starter even though we had already expressed our wish for enough time when ordering and that was exactly what we didn't appreciate. After that we didn't see the waiter again. No one asked if everything was OK. Topping up water or wine isn't a waiter's job either. It's a shame, we felt like ripped off tourists even though one of us speaks the local language.

We booked a table when we called in earlier in the day. In spite of this, having turned up on time for some reason we were shown to a table that was not set when others around us has cutlery, glasses and napkins. The food was very good and we had a very nice bottle of red wine. However the service was terrible, the table wasn’t set until our main courses had arrived and then we got paper napkins rather than the linen ones on the other tables, we had to repeatedly ask for the wine. Setting great, food very good but service poor. The bill for two main courses, a bottle of water and a bottle of wine (1300) was 2380 MKD so reasonable.
