A classic restaurant in an historic town

A lovely little restaurant in an absolutely beautiful old town, perched high on a hill in the heart of Istria. We didn’t expect it to be open in mid December but it was, and we were made to feel very welcome. The waiter was exceptionally attentive, the menu was extensive and the food delicious. I had the local home made pasta fusi d’Istria with grated raw white truffle on top - amazing - and a glass of local red wine.

Excellent wine, amazing food and truffles

While visiting Istria for the weekend, we decided to visit Motovun as well. For those who don't know, Motovun is a picturesque little, located on top of a hill in Istria, best know for its film festival, Motovun film festival. Besides that, Motovun is known for its truffles, so we just had to try the food as well. We visited a local restaurant with a cute, romantic and authentic interior. We ordered a glass of red Merlot wine and while waiting for our main dish, we were served their homemade tapenada made od black olives, olive oil and truffles with a homemade bread, it was delicious. When we got our main dish served, the truffles scent took over. We ate a beefsteak with black truffles, teran sauce and grilled vegetables, rump steak in teran sauce with vegetables and black truffles, homemade gnocchi with shrimps and black truffles and homemade pasta with black truffles. The staff was very friendly, the atmosphere was warm and friendly. It's a must for all truffle lovers!

Cosy restaurant with great service

Visited here on a very wet evening, and were seated on a covered terrace, which was great, as when the rain let up, we could enjoy the evening sun. We had tomato soup with truffles, then pasta and steak with truffles. The pasta was really well made, just al dente and a perfectly cooked steak. My husband had chocolate tart for desert which was smooth, rich, and indulgent. We had 1/2 litre wine and fizzy water and the meal came to about £50 for two in total, which we felt was very reasonable. The staff were helpful and friendly, would eat here again.

One of the worst food experiences

One of the worst food experiences that I had had in the last couple of years. To spoil the meat so much as those guys do - oh my, you have to have the talent to do that! After ordering a beef stake for my husband we refused to eat it, and the waiter offered us smth different to order. Do we did... and make it a try with the pork medallions. The question is: why do you boil the meat first and only after that fry it? The pork is much better when you take a fresh piece of meat and cook it. The bread wasn’t fresh as well, the rocket salad is just a the salad of some bag salad from a super market simply opened and dumped into your plate 🙄 come on guys, please, at least add some cherry tomatoes to make an impression that you actually did spend some time on cooking it.... to be honest with your customers, could you name your place some “canteen”, cause you have nothing about to be called a restaurant... Nevertheless, I have to mention that the waiters are very nice guys and the location is good.

An amazing experience

I rarely write restaurant reviews, but we met a waiter in the restaurant who had to be recognized publicly. Matija was phenomenal, not only very accommodating and helpful, he was prompt, smart, caring, and knowledgeable about all of the food on the menu. And he just had this friendly demeanour about him that made us all happy. He even explained the process of truffle hunting in great detail. Going to Mondo restaurant turned out to be the best decision that we could make.

Maybe it is the best restaurant at Motovun but it is definitely too highly rated. One thing we loved is that there is a bit more options as meat dish and pasta with truffles but it was not as good as we expected. Welcome dish from the kitchen was bread with spread (olive oil, olives, capers,...). That was good. For warm starter we ordered tomato soup with truffles - we see no point of adding truffles on this soup, would be better without it and pumpkin soup which was too plain. We missed salt, paper and herbs. For main dish we had stuffed squid which were OK and pasta with carrot pesto which had lack of salt and herbs again. We also tried house dessert ( biscuit dough with chocolate ganache) which tasted like something we would quickly done home when we had absolutely no idea what to do and panacotta which was also quite basic with too much sugar. Would not order desserts if we knew they would taste like that. Anyway food was OK but we expected more for the best rated restaurant and the prices they have.

Excellent restaurant in Motovun

Congrats to the staff Congrats to the chef We had a very nice moment even though the trufffles taste was very (too?) delicate. We would have enjoyed tasting the difference between black and white truffles but summer made it impossible as they only serve seasonal products (which is a great thing!) The meat with truffles was still very tasty and well cooked. Big up to the free tapenade appetizer which is awesome. I suggest you book in advance.

Cozy restaurant with great food

We were having a lunch in konoba Mondo. Regardless of the fact that restaurant was almost full and waitress very busy, they were very polite and always available. Food was prepared very well and tasty and offered hose wine was very good. All in all very nice experience.

Amazing food, excellent location, very kind and nice staff

We made online reservations, the correspondence was quick and kind. The staff is very nice, efficient and professional. I had polenta with truffles(a must try, the flavour is to die for!), and my boyfriend had lamb in teran sauce with polenta. His dish was also excellent, we could not find a thing to criticize :) We drank the house wine and some sparkling water. Before our meal the waiter brought a truffle, black olive and olive oil spread. Needles to say, we inhaled it! If you are ever in Motovun, Mondo is the place to go!

We arrived in the afternoon, on 14.06 at 5pm, after a day hiking so we just wanted to eat a late lunch. There were several free tables, but the waitress told us that we cannot be seated anywhere as all the tables are booked. We asked what time are the tables booked for and she told us that most of them are booked for 19:00. So we asked if we could just sit and have something to eat because it won’t take us 2 hours, and she told us to come after 21, as there will be free tables at that time. We went to a nearby restaurant and finished eating by 18:30. Not customer oriented attitude. Won’t come back.

Excellent service and food

We had a wonderful lunch here in July. The parmesan risotto with truffles were out of this world. And my family loved their dishes. You know what makes a restaurant good? When you're talking to your family 2 weeks after you visit and they can recall the dish they had and why it was good. By comparison, we ate at a Michelin star restaurant recently and we can't remember any dishes. Mondo is a family owned restaurant and it was just a wonderful experience to have lunch here. They aren't situated in a location with a "view" but I'll take superior food and then walk over to the view after lunch.

Excellent food!

Wow! Just wow! Excellent service, food, everything! Highly recommend. First we got on the house their domestic bread with pasta of olives, truffels,capers! Very tasty! Then we order mondo plate for two where you get Istrian chesse and salami ( with melted cheese with mediterrain spices inside! Great). Later mai dishes, I was full, could not take dessert. And after that again some cofee on the house

Truffles and more truffles

We had a great dinner here and felt like we were part of the Bourdain episode. We ordered several pasta and polenta dishes with fresh black or white truffles, depending on the dish. We were pleasantly surprised when the owner came out and shaved large amounts of truffles on our dishes. We have had shaved truffles at other restaurants before but never so much. We may have got lucky and been there at the right time that day, but it definitely was an experience we will remember!

Perfect

Delicios lunch, the chef made something extra for our son with sensory disorder. Ombolo with mushroom and also lamb chops were made like a dream and orange semmifreddo is a must. The staff is so friendly and they know and do their job as an example to others. Definitely coming here again!

Very poor and quite expensive

We had a lunch there on the rainy October day. Not really busy but the Food was really poor and overpriced. Bread was 2 days old and pumpkin soup had no flavour. Eggs with truffel and everything was overpriced but we also had to Wait 50 minutes for soup and eggs. Motovun is nice to see but for lunch Look in the surrounding villages.
