I always try to stop at JCD whenever I am anywhere near Birmingham. I have enjoyed many of their menu items over the years. The appetizers (wings and pork rinds) are some of the best I have eaten. My fallback favorite entree has always been...the Glazed Pork Chop. But all these will have to move over for the Shrimp and Grits! It is the perfect meal. The shrimp had the perfect texture and the flavor was an excellent combination of grill and smoke. The grits were creamy without being mushy and the gravy complimented both. I had to finish off the night with the White Chocolate Bread Pudding. Very rich but not overwhelming. Of course, John's always seems to have an incredible local craft beer selection. I enjoyed the Snakehandler, strong but still refreshing. I have not been able to get in town in time for their Happy Hour, but it sounds great! John's City Diner is a must for locals and travelers alike. I was not able to experience the excellent whiskey selection on this visit because I was driving. And they have a great mural.More

HIghly recommended! 8 of us traveling together from Alabama wrapped up our trip here and it was one of our favorite meals of the trip. The food was very good, the servers were extremely accommodating and helpful (we had 2 vegetarians, and 3 people with...gluten intolerance), Everyone enjoyed their food a lot.More

We had a great experience at Johnny’s City Diner. Our server, CC, was absolutely sweeter than sugar. We really enjoyed the great service she gave us. The food was great, heavy and comforting. My husband and I split a spinach salad and split the meatloaf....It was still a lot if food. Our son enjoyed the Mac & cheese.More

I don’t work in downtown so we used the day off as an opportunity to try some of the downtown lunch spots I have heard people talk about. I am so glad we tried John’s City Diner. Excellent food and service. You can’t go wrong...with this location. Great menu options for everyone.More

Thanks to TA reviews, we decided to walk from our hotel to John’s City Diner. I’m being lazy – read the other 5 star reviews and add me to the list. It’s a great spot with great service and great value.

We walked down the street from the Hampton. I had meatloaf with tasty gravy and a side salad. My partner had the fish and chips, good but fried a bit too long. Our bartender Phillis was wonderful. A dinner and Two drinks each $69

The food here is amazing and extremely well priced. The amount of care and effort put into each dish is incredible. Definitely a must visit while in town.

The menu options are unique. The meals are made with fresh ingredients. The staff is friendly and efficient, especially Trudy, who made us feel at home. The flavor of everything was exceptional. We will definitely be back.

This is a comfortable, popular diner approximately four or five blocks South from the Tutwiler Hampton hotel on Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. As you enter, there's a small bar to the right serving some really good craft ales. Behind the bar, there's a roomy restaurant...configured in the typical diner style (booths etc.). Our server was friendly and helpful. Service was efficient but never hurried, and the food was really very good, nicely presented, generous portions with a few new takes on diner food that we hadn't encountered before (the sweet heat pork skins were great, and we really enjoyed the meat loaf and Springer Mountain chicken from the 'classics' menu section). We had a great evening here. Very pleased.More

No dress code. We are a casual, upscale diner. Our servers wear gas station style shirts and jeans for a point of reference. Hope you enjoyed your visit!
