The old quarter of Nessebar is so fabulous that no matter where they eat, everyone seems to rate that place the best. The Old Sailor easily qualifies. The fun-kitschy nautical décor, the extensive seafood menu, crisp Bulgarian wine selection and the very solicitous, gentle service...make it a meal to remember.
My wife enjoyed an avocado salad; our friend got barbecued pork bits. Because I was delighted to see them offered, I ordered a starter of whelks, knowing they are a major Black Sea product, and a main of skate wing. I won’t swear they weren’t previously frozen (which is often true most places anyway in early April), but they were delicious. I had to fight off my lunch companions to sop up the garlic butter.
It was a chilly off-season day, so warm seating was limited to the small first room with its TV. But it also meant we could park within a couple of blocks.
Afterwards, we explored the ruins of Saint Sophia, which are right at the restaurant’s doorstep. All in all, a very pleasant meal.More
