This was my first and probably last time at The Melting Pot in Appleton, WI. I was part of a group of 8, some of whom had been to The Melting Pot in the past.
Service was excellent and the establishment was clean, though very...dimly lit.
The pricing is basically $27 or $50, depending on the number of 'courses' you want. Everyone in our group chose the $50 per person option, which was 3 or 4 courses; for food alone, we're talking $400 for the group. That did not include cost of beverages.
Remember, this is Appleton, Wisconsin. Not Chicago; not New York - Manhattan; not a Zagat or Michelin rated place. It's a fondue - pseudo hot pot eatery. The quality of their ingredients is mediocre - they do not use organic anything. At least with organics, that would in my mind justify the prices they charge.
We started with the hot cheese course, and had plates of cut carrots, celery (which does not count as a vegetable in my book), Granny Smith apple, and various cubed breads; second course was a tiny salad. I ordered Caesar Salad, and it came with some sort of crunchy topping that I've never had on any Caesar Salad before; Third course was the 'protein' course - I opted for double shrimp portion and fresh salmon; double shrimp equals about 10 pieces of shrimp, probably 20-25 size, and salmon pieces that, combined, would be about a 2 x 3 inch piece.
Last course was chocolate, and that came with strawberries, pineapple, and other items to dip. The quality of the different chocolates that were in the three different pots was low quality - very gritty texture, low quality chocolate.
Our group had a good time together, but we would have done so in any setting. I can't imagine what those in our group who had wine must have shelled out for this 'experience'.
Our server was wonderful; the place was attractive - simple, basic, clean, and nice. But I can not justify paying $50 for what I received - after I returned home I was still hungry and ate a nice home cooked burger.
To be honest, if you want to do fondue and hot pot, you're better off doing this at home. Get an electric wok and a couple of small crock pots; use the electric wok for the hot pot, fill with broth, and slice up your veggies and protein of your choice; put cheese or chocolate in the small crock pots, and invite your friends. You'll save a ton of money, have better quality ingredients, and still have fun.More
