Had dinner here with a friend the other night (before seeing the show at Little Theatre). I'm not sure how long Taverna Cretekou has been here but we have been eating here since 1985. We were a bigger group at one time but some have reetired and moved; another we lost to cancer. We eat here a couple of times each theater season because the food is always great and service is too. The menu is pretty extensive. The problem is that the food is so good that making a decision can be really tough. It is a family run place and even on your first visit is hard not to feel like family. Eating here is the perfect dining experience.

We ate here on vacation 8 years ago and liked it so much, we made reservations to came back here a few weeks ago. The food is still wonderful and the service is great. I also loved that we could eat outside in a beautiful courtyard. At one point, one of the waiters (with a stage voice) began singing to a table and had us all join in. I had the pastitsio which was excellent.

Our large party of eight was so fortunate to dine at Taverna Cretekou tonight and to be seated in Abdel’s section. What a pro! From start to finish Abdel accommodated all of us, including the two toddlers in our party. Taverna Cretekou’s food is exquisite —from stuffed grape leaves and crab-stuffed mushrooms to grilled octopus, baby eggplant (imam baildri) and calamari, all of us were impressed with our appetizers. Standout entrees included the lamb shank and Taverna Cretekou Special which features an array of Greek dishes such as moussaka and pastitisio. We look forward to returning to Taverna Cretekou next time we’re in Alexandria and will be sure to request seating in Abdel’s section. Thank you for your outstanding service, Abdel!

Although the staff was friendly, the quality and quantity of the entre did not justify its high cost. There are many other close-by restaurants that offer better food at lower cost. After being seated I informed the waiter that I did not want water, but then was offered water three more times!

Only had a braised lamb shank, but that's all I need to have to avoid this restaurant. Lovely garden, but the meal I had was subpar. Mediocre lamb served with a watery and tasteless red sauce and swimming in soupy orzo is not what I expect from great Greek cuisine. This classic dish should be the mark of a good Greek restaurant. Have the other diners who rate this so highly ever had fine Greek cuisine? I think not. Maybe for the unsuspecting it passes muster, but for those who admire and love Greek cuisine, it fails the test.

Disappointing aptly describes our recent experience at the restaurant. Once regarded as one of the finest Greek restaurants in the country, and our favorite, sadly it is no more. Known for its ambiance and Greek wait staff, food quality and presentation, and reasonable prices, this is all gone. The moussaka was simply ground beef with a topping, the blob of taramasalata was served on a tiny plate with no chips or bread (we had to ask for this), the Greek Salad came with nearly no dressing, two tiny pieces of feta and although we asked for anchovies we got only one, and the house red wine was outrageously expensive. Even with allowances for Covid-19, this was all inexcusable.

My husband and I ate here today on the patio, just wow, the food was amazing and the service (Kristian) was first class. We were treated like royalty from walking into the door to being seated. We both had the Taverna Cretekou special which is a little portion of everything and it was delicious. My husband is 2nd generation Greek and said it was one of the best meals he’s had in a Greek restaurant. We will certainly return and highly recommend to anyone looking for a meal with a great atmosphere.

Disappointed. Noise level extremely HIGH, Martini delivered with large chip in the glass. Drink was not remade, contents just poured into another glass. Quality of food not very good and I say this having many years living abroad in Greek culture. Finally, a starter orded was billed as a separate entree a 24.00 error.

OMG! The food was amazing! We are not Greek food connoisseurs but it was the best meal we had while visiting DC. The garden area was warm and cozy with lights and trees and flowers. Owners, Christos and Denise, stopped at our table several times and even treated us to free baklava dessert for our anniversary. Be sure to have Nick as your server. Great family owned restaurant.

It was a beautiful summer day and I was hungry for lunch. I live here, so I am aware of tourists. We locals take advantage of them. I thought a nice salad outside surrounded by a lovely garden would be perfect. The hostess and waiter were lovely. My salad was a catastrophe. Supposedly an entrée, greens shoved into a small bowl with two sandwich size slices of unflavorful tomatoes, slices of cucumber (both prepped for gyros, obviously), two dolmades, uncut red onion rings (also for a sandwich), some olives, two small pieces of Feta and two canned anchovies. Poor vinaigrette that tasted like nothing. Bland bread, that tasted like nothing. The salad couldn't be eaten without cutting the veggies with a knife, but in a small bowl, there was no room! I ordered sparkling water and was given a 24 oz. bottle costing $8. I was dining alone and my waiter know that. So, I spent $25 + tip on an awful lunch, but in a very pretty place.

I love the convenience of this restaurant, four minutes from our hotel. The staff graciously welcomed our large party of 8 even though we arrived within an hour of closing. It was raining so we could not take advantage of what looks to be a lovely outdoor space, Everyone enjoyed their food.

Walking in Old Town we were looking for a nice restaurant for lunch. We are still comfortable eating outside only and the courtyard in the back of Taverna was empty. Our server was so completely friendly and helpful. We chose the Spanikopita, vegetarian selection and Gyro. The appetizers were the extraordinary octopus along with hummus. We finished the meal with the special Greek coffee with ouzo and whipped cream. The price was reasonable, the food was fantastic, and the atmosphere superb. This is one of the best Greek restaurants I've been to. Everything on the menu is wonderful.

Having lived in Europe for 20 years and having a favorite greek restaurant this is hard. The atmosphere was nice and everyone was very friendly. The food was hit and miss. Maybe we are spoiled. Simple things like when ordering wine someone should try it not simply pour both glasses. No salt and pepper on the table. The Moussaka was more meat which was disappointing. The saganaki was not breaded as we have had before but was still good. We will try it again.

It was disappointing. It was a late light dinner a few nights ago. The veggies weren't completely cooked. And my husbands spanakopita wasn't fully cooked, wasn't warm and wasn't fresh. And when I looked at what was next to our table I got sick in my stomach. The ledge/floor from the next dinning area was filthy!.

The decor and service were top notch. Accommodated a huge 13 person group. Olive oil and bread may have been the best part of the meal. I got the special branzino which was a little boring. I felt like it was missing flavor and seasoning. Definitely fresh and cook perfectly but a little bland. Enjoyable experience although the food was nothing special.
