We read and heard lots of great comments about The Tavern, so we decided to try it after a matinee at Barter Theatre. We were not impressed. The building is a great piece of history. The dining experience was not memorable. Our server was less than attentive. We had to ask for drink refills. We had to ask for bread... More

Celebrated my wife's Birthday here. The food was exceptional with prices ranging from $25 to $45. The Tavern is one of the oldest buildings in the country and built of logs. Highly recommend.

This is the second time dining at The Tavern and the experience and food was outstanding. The owner made a point to check on each table to make sure everyone was satisfied. The staff was very friendly. The crab cakes and ribeye were perfect. They tell you to plan for 2 hours but we were there for an hour and... More

Good German food is hard to find throughout much of the South, but if you're heading through Abingdon, you're in luck! My wife and I went for dinner on a Tuesday evening around 6-ish without reservations, not expecting any kind of crowd. They were able to accommodate us (very graciously, I might add!), but this place seems to be quite... More

While overnight in the Abingdon area for business, four of decided to dine at The Tavern for our evening meal. First recommendation is to make reservations as soon as possible as The Tavern is normally fully booked even on weeknights. Upon arrival on time for our reservations, we were promptly greeted and seated and the drink orders taken. Fresh warm... More

The atmosphere in this restaurant opened as a tavern in 1779 is warm, cozy and inviting. The owner, Max, makes you feel like family coming home for dinner. The staff is wonderful and the service fantastic ! Highly recommend !

We had a fantastic dinner at the Tavern recently. We both had the specials for the evening, I, the surf and turf which was a filet medallion and scallops over cheese grits, and my husband, the goulash. The building is extremely old and they've kept the dining rooms close to their original state. I would recommend making a reservation. We... More

The Tavern is located in an historic building built in 1779 which also still has the painted numbers for hospital beds during the Civil War, graciously shown to us by the owner, Max. I enjoyed a delicious dinner of grilled Tavern Trout with asparagus served on a bed of an almond, mushroom, and wild rice mixture. Service was excellent. This... More
