My husband and I have been to The Tavern before but not in some time. The atmosphere is all that is desired in such a historic setting, and our waitress was lovely. We both enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms appetizer before dinner entrees. I got a...stuffed filet, and my husband chose one of the traditional German offerings.More

This was our second visit to The Tavern. The food selection is excellent and tastes delicious. The proximity to The Barter Theater is a bonus.

Beautiful hidden jem in the oldest buildings in Abingdon. The staff was very friendly and extremely attentive. The food was delicious and priced well. There are different sitting areas and I particularly loved the balcony overlooking the patio.

Preferences over how a dish is made does not make a dish good or bad. We have been preparing wienerschnitzel this way for 28 years, and the technique we use was taught by a native German. You were not told to leave, you were already...More

Hubby and I enjoyed Sunday Brunch on the patio. Just perfect! Attentive wait staff (#Ezra) made the surroundings and meal even better. I enjoyed a Classic Bloody Mary and then a Mimosa - both perfect! (Hubby stayed with unsweetened tea). I ordered the Veggie Omelette...(sans onions) with sliced seasoned tomatoes (heirloom tomatoes!). The omelette was fluffy and overflowing (perfectly) with veggies - I was beyond thrilled! Hubby had the ham and cheese omelette with a side of crispy bacon. He enjoyed his but he did taste my omelette and said mine was better😉. We will be back and will make reservations as soon as we know our schedule (they are in high demand!). Thank you, Ezra, and all the Staff of The Tavern for a wonderful experience!More

We had dinner at The Tavern on a Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The menu had a nice variety and the food was fresh and well prepared. The soft crab appetizer was especially good. Service was very good. We'll go back.

Had a large (20+) family dinner at the Tavern. I worked with Josh prior to the dinner who was so helpful and accommodating. We had a pre-set menu and he worked with various dietary restrictions. We had planned for dinner outside on the patio, but...he had a backup plan in place in case it rained (which of course it did). Our waiter was incredible and so friendly and on top of things. Not only was the staff fantastic, but the food was A+. I’ve been traveling to Abington for 20+ years and this is by far the best restaurant in the town. Don’t miss this gem!More

This past Saturday night a group of friends had dinner at the Tavern. The service was outstanding. The atmosphere was without equal. 5 of the 6 meals were very delicious. I had a schnitzel. It is apparent that the chef does not know how to...properly prepare a schnitzel-you literally "beat the hell" out of it, then bread it, and lastly rapidly fry. My cutlet was thick, had no breading, and was tough. If I had been there with my wife instead of being part of a group, I would have sent the meal back.More

This business dates back to 1779, 343 years ago! The interior maintains much of it rustic charm, and the food and service are excellent. Everything we ordered was exquisite, including escargot and duck breasts. We were surprised to see the extensive menu included German dishes...not often offered. Outdoor seating is available. Street parking.More

I had a couple apps and drinks on the back deck after a long day and saw the inside briefly. The food was impressive and service impeccable. It's a gem in Abingdon for sure!

Stuffed salmon was one of the best dishes we’ve ever eaten! Also had the Jagerschnitzel which was amazing! Atmosphere is fun as the building is very historic.

We had heard good things about The Tavern, and it did not disappoint. I had the trout, excellent. I also had a cocktail, superb. Hubby and I shared a dessert, the stuff that dreams are made of. Definitely will go back.

For many years (sans 2020-21 for the pandemic), my mother has taken me to The Tavern for my birthday. We drive from Kingsport because it has become my favorite restaurant within at least a 45-minute drive. I ordered the Black and Bleu Angus Beef Medallions,...which were otherworldly. They were blackened in a cast-iron skillet served with bleu cheese crumbles and a Port Wine sauce. I had potatoes with them. Mom enjoyed her Wienerschnitzel with spaetzle. She had a glass of wine, and I had a delicious chocolate martini and two beers. Thanks to the current inflation spike, the check totaled approximately $125. Nevertheless, it was such a treat! One last point that I am compelled to underscore is that our experience is continually enhanced by our favorite server anywhere—Dwyane. He is incredible! For my birthday, he always treats me to the crème brulé (the best). Although we only patronize The Tavern once a year—and for the first time since 2019—Dwyane always remembers us and treats us as if we were his family.More

This oldest bar in Virginia was delightful. The history, ambiance and service was great. The french onion soup, trout and prime rib all tasty. Our table was the “love letter “ as it had a hidden drawer full of notes!

I don't understand the good reviews of this restaurant. We came to the Tavern for a special occasion in November. None of the menu "specials" were available. I ordered stuffed salmon and my friend ordered a pork dish. My salmon was overcooked, overstuffed, and tasteless....My friend's cabbage side was totally overflavored with cinnamon - inedible. His pork tasted like a bad version of chicken marsala (on pork!). Neither of us could finish our meals, because they were simply terrible. That said, the service was good. So if you want good service and horrible food at a high price, this is the place for you.More

Yes, there is a bar in there- a small one. The night we were there it was not crowded & you could have sat there... but, based on above response, they may have the right idea about going elsewhere to sit at the bar first.
