A beautiful Fall day to sit outside and eat TexMex so we chose this restaurant based on friend’s recommendation. The menu warns that it takes 30-45 minutes for an order and that’s how long we waited even tho there were few other diners. Our group...liked the tamales, but not loved them...especially considering the wait time. Beans & Rice were OK but could’ve used more seasoning.More

We really enjoyed our dinner. We were a party of 8 with everyone ordering something different. I had the fish taco, which outside of Hawaii, was the best fish taco I have ever had. The chips and salsa were fantastic too. Prices are reasonable. Would...love to come back when the weather is just a little nicer to enjoy the adorable patio area. It looked like a fairy garden!More

Margarita was delicious. Pork tamale was fine, I think could have been better. Pork was quite fatty and thick corn.

My daughter lived away from Texas for awhile, so she was looking forward to tamales when she came to Austin. We met up and figured that with a name like "Tamale House" there must be bragging rights. We walked up to the counter to order...and saw that one tamale was $5 which is way overpriced for one tamale. I figured the tamales must just be that good. Imagine my surprise when I saw how big one tamale was. I was in heaven. Well, suffice it to say that the place is too proud of their tamales and shame proper tamale makers. It was the worst tamale I had ever tasted and that includes the one time I tried making them on my own for the first time. The Tamale House needs to change its name as it is false advertising. The tamale I tasted was mostly masa. There was very little seasoning in the masa and also very little filling. I paid $5 mostly for the masa which was not even fully cooked. I will never go there for tamales again. Anyone who likes their tamales must be from up north and tasting tamales for the first time. We also seated ourselves in the back area which seemed to adjoin a coat room. Once seated, we looked at the coat room which must be an on premise thrift store. The smell from the store area was old and musty so it took away from cooking smells. I would not recommend eating at this place.More

We went to Tamale House East on a Friday evening looking for authentic tamales and fixings. We ordered at the counter for the three of us where we paid and left an advance 20% tip. We were given the chips and queso we ordered at...the counter. We found a table as there were several available at the time. Just after we found our table, the restaurant became crowded. After waiting about 25 minutes while eating our chips and queso, we noticed that most of the groups that arrived in line after us had received their food and some had finished eating. I checked at the counter and was told the single fish taco we ordered was what was holding up our order but we were next up. After another 15 minutes we checked again and was again told we were next and given another order of chips/queso with an apology and thanks for our patience. After another 15-20 minutes with no food we were offered tiny frozen margaritas, another apology and asked to reconfirm our order (they had the ticket). It was over an hour before we got our food with tables around us turning twice in that time. The tamales were disappointing - the pork tamales had nothing inside but a slight spread of sauce - no pork! The veggie tamale was similar. All maseca with nothing inside. Probably the worst tamales I've had anywhere. The beans and queso were good. After waiting over an hour to get any food we weren't about to ask for anything else. Our 3 plates, queso and chips and 3 waters to drink came to over $56 with the 20% tip. I felt ripped off. We will not be back nor can we recommend to others.More

A refuge from the hipsters down the street; a bit of nostalgia ready to eat. The staff has skills but they’re indifferent to speed and independent of the foodie industry. Filling food, warmish beer.

Created a Trip Advisor account just to post about this place! Stumbled across this place when I was headed to Zilker and I cannot wait to go back. I have found my go to spot for tamales!
