I've been twice, and while I can't say I've been to Franklin's, I think this could be the best brisket in town. Great central location. We went on a rainy Saturday, party of 4, at about 1pm and waited about 45 minutes for a nice table upstairs. I would say the coleslaw is undressed, or very lightly - so if... More

We were searching for a place to eat that would help us feel the local character of Austin. This was a great choice. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. Be sure to get the Baked Beans as a side and the smoked banana pudding for dessert.

We came as part of a trip around eating places and this was my favourite. The BBQ plate was really good, brisket good and ribs very good. It's a tough town to excel at the smokey art of BBQ but these guys do a good job. The drinks menu is fascinating and well worth a lazy trawl through!

We felt like bar-b-que so our son took us here for dinner. He told us, "It doesn't look like much from the outside, but wait until you taste the food." He was right. I got the pulled pork sandwich. It was so tasty. My husband and son shared the ribs, sausage, and brisket combo. We all sampled everything. The crust... More

I think what makes freedmens different is their BBQ has a bit of a peppery taste to it. Very good but unique to traditional BBQ. We ended up ordering a half pound of ribs, brisket, and sausage. Go for fatty brisket. Service was good and they don't rush you out! Hip atmosphere as well.

Amazing bbq, second time at Freedmen's. Try the Turkey Sandwich with beans. I will make it a point to return very soon.

Not quite as mouth watering as Franklin's but the staff is great. Some of the cocktails are hit or miss. Banana pudding is delicious.

1/1/17 My husband and I were craving BBQ, he stumbled upon Freedman's on Yelp. Most restaurants/places of business were closed on New Years Day so we settled on this place. We sat outside in the back. Our waitress wasn't the warmest but she did a good job. I was disappointed to find out they didn't have cornbread, green beans, any... More

Cool vibe, cold beer, good tunes, great bbq. Fair price - Bingo! I enjoyed it despite a very hot evening.

Recommended by a friend, got there early evening. The place was busy with a wait of an hour, however the bar service was poor and after ordering drinks the barman totally forgot about us. Took 20 mins to get our drinks. They had run out of most items on the menu so we were left with little choice. Food was... More
