Ordered take out of 3 appetizers and 1 meal. It took closer to 90 minutes for the order when they said it would only take 45 minutes. The containers used for take-out are not able to be eaten out of. They do not provide silverware...or napkins with the food. I’m planning on coming back to Amarillo, but I will NEVER COME BACK HERE OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.More
Stopped here for dinner while passing through town on my way up to Colorado. I stuck to the basics with the chicken tikka masala and it was oh so good! Large pieces of chicken in a creamy sauce. The mild was just right for my...spice level. And whatever you do, make sure to order the garlic naan. Best I've ever had. Great service too.More
We absolutely love Indian Oven. Who would have thought the best indian food I've ever eaten was found in the Texas Panhandle. The food is authentic, the wait staff is awesome and the atmosphere is casually elegant. The vindaloo is my favorite, but everything I've...eaten here is off the chart.More
Indian Oven is a small, beautifully-decorated restaurant near the center of Amarillo. I sampled a variety of foods off their lunch-time buffet, and every item was good. I also ordered off the menu, a mango lassi drink, and a pistachio ice cream dessert (pista kulfi)....The kulfi was the best I've ever had, smooth and creamy, a delicate combination of pistachio flavor with strong enough hints of saffron to keep my after-dinner palate entertained.
The menu and website advertise that they are allergy-friendly, and indeed they are. When I checked to be sure that everything but the bread was gluten-free, my waiter promptly checked again with the chef and told me that the bread, the (breaded) chicken wings, and the semolina-based dessert on the buffet were the only things there that contained gluten. As I am very sensitive and get a quick reaction to even small amounts of the offending grains, I can say with confidence that the food I ate was safe.
For all the above reasons, I'd like to give this restaurant 5 stars.
But, while the superb dessert I had tells me the chef is capable of wonders, I wish that skill had been applied to all the other dishes. I found there were consistently two kinds of spice levels in all the dishes I tried. One was wonderfully complex and layered, the way all the best Indian dishes are, but every one of these had lots of chilis or pepper in them -- too hot for my palate to enjoy. The other -- the majority of the dishes -- were not hot-spicy at all, neither hot-spicy nor mild-spicy. They were bordering on disappointingly bland.
The dish I judge Indian restaurants by, the world-famous Chicken Tikka Masala, was here, as in every Indian restaurant I've tried in West Texas, apparently made from the same pre-made mix that seems to be being used to please the palates of Americans unfamiliar with the dish's depth of spices found in the best restaurants elsewhere. Tikka Masala sauce doesn't require hot-spices, so Indian Oven got that right, but it shouldn't be so bland and thin as to be almost flavorless. It's for this dish and the other mild dishes that were not just mild but monotone that I'm taking a star off what otherwise would have been a 5-star review.More
My family often stops through Amarillo on the way to Colorado. A highlight of each stop is ordering takeout from Indian Oven. They have delicious food and are reasonably priced. It is perfect for picking up and carrying back to the hotel — they’ll even...provide plates and utensils! We love the vegetable samosas, chicken tikka masala, biryanis, and Naan. We’ve never been disappointed.More
Indeed we had a very good experience with our lunch here. Fast courteous n very impeccably clean restaurant. Staff is wonderfully friendly and quality of our meal was excellent and tasty. We love Indian food and it’s hard to find in south Texas and while...visiting Amarillo we had a wonderful experience. We didn’t try the buffet we ordered of the menu.More
