I come back to Japan about twice a year. I was first introduced to this place in 2015. Needless to say I have come back ever since. The former chef has moved on and the new chef is picking right up where he left. Amazing...food crafted in a very small kitchen and of course great beer as well. Staff are very friendly and remember me the once a year I make it back. If you are in Kyoto this is a must! Down a small alley and very simply laid out..not a big place but quaint and it has become one of my favorites over the years.More

Thank you so much Juyondai! I am happy to see you both every time when you are in Kyoto. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year. Hope you are fine in the tough situation and please take care!

As some reviewers have already mentioned, a hidden treasure. Very friendly bar that specialises in craft beer with at least 6 guest beers. You can either sit at the tables or at the bar where you can watch your food being freshly prepared and cooked....Seafood is a speciality, but I had the winter vegetable soup which was delicious.. along with a couple of beers, this cost 2000 Yen. Nice ambience, casual and Western toilets. Staffed by a very friendly and polite team.More

Beer Komachi is a hidden treasure in Kyoto. First things first...this place is right near the Higashiyama station of the Kyoto subway, so it’s convenient to get to. The main attraction is craft beer - of which there is a solid selection. But the food...is also very satisfying. We had the sashimi special and it was so good we ordered it again. Also tried some tempura and pizza. Everything was comforting and delicious. This place is not gourmet. It is more of a western style bar and restaurant that serves some pretty food food. You will enjoy your meal here.More

Seven or eight interesting beers on tap, plus a few bottled beers, sake, plum wine etc. Food decent. Service quick and polite. Atmosphere nice and quiet - no annoying loud music or similar. Overall a warm and pleasant experience, and we came back here most...evenings for a pre- or post-dinner drink while we were staying nearby.More

It’s rare to find a place that serves good craft beer and great interesting food. Beer Komachi definitely fits the bill! The Hokkaido IPAs were delicious and the food is creative and yet yummy. Absolutely oishii!

We were VERY lucky this was located near the Airbnb house we rented. The rest of the streets close up and go to sleep, this place was still open. My husband stated it was the best tempura he'd had in his life! It was so...fresh and non-greasy. My kids were happy getting their "American eats", they had great pizza options, fantastic french fries. The Sushimi menu rotates nightly (we ate there 3 times) and the beer selection is great and varied. Wish we had one in California!More

I am a beer afficionado, and I investigated on beforehand which craft beer bars were most recommended in Kyoto, and this place came up. There is a Nice and authentic vibe in the place, with very basic wooden plank interior. Appearantly Trump was visiting Japan...and handed over a trophy to a sumo wrestler on this day and that was a huge deal that was covered on the TV, accomanied with cheers from some of the locals at the bar. Quite entertaining. However, beer selection is OK, I got a decent Saison that hadn’t been checked in on Untappd before so quite rare selection. But “only” 5 different on tap. The food was quite alright but mostly for snacks.More

Crafted beer bar. They serve beers and something to eat. There are different types of crafted beers from different Japan's places (Kyoto, Hiroshima...). Beers are a bit expensive

We tried 4 out of 7 draft beers and all were light & tasty. They have several choices of pub food so you won’t be hungry. If you want to try different types of japanese beer, have a snack with the drinks and communicate in...English, this is the place for you.More

Beer Komachi will give you a perfect introduction to the local craft beers. When we visited the place they offered eight well selected local beers on tap. We tried them all :) and found some new favourites, especially the Ekuanot Edge IPA from Ushitora Brewery...(unfortunatelly impossible to buy in Europe). The design is very cool with a minimalistic and industrial look, but the atmosphere is very laidback, social and friendly, so you'll probably find yourself discussing the beers with someone from France, the sights of the day with an American and the food with a couple from Spain. The food is also worth to mention. They offer a small selection of surprisingly well done dishes, from fatty tuna to sausages.More

This is the most interesting craft beer place that I have enjoyed in the world. It is located off Sanjo Avenue near the subway station on the tiny public market, Furukawa Market, that juts out on one end on Sanjo and on the other end...on Shirakawa River. The pub looks like it is work under construction, with knotty pine wood paneling inside and outside, but that is by design. The patrons, at least the night I came, are all foreign visitors and range in age from young people, and oldsters, some ‘flower power’ hangovers, others octogenarians with canes. Good. Diversity! The brews are all from Japan. I tasted and drank the MARCA Little Dry Belgian IPA from Osaka. Very delicious. I also found very tasty the tempura fish with fried potatoes, the skins on the potatoes an indicator of their freshness. Here, low foam = low foam and a pint size = a pint size. Service is good. Prices are comparatively reasonable and include consumer taxes. Overall: Hi Five!More

Beer Komachi has always a good place for us every time we are in Kyoto. The enlargement has made it even better. The teppanyaki grill allows for a larger menu of freshly prepared foods. We tried the oysters (sweet and delicious) and the scallops (tasted...of the sea), the yellowtail (moist and sweet and grilled) and a coupe of great beers. It was all very satisfying. The atmosphere is still a bit rough but it isn’t yet finished. We love the side street it is on and usually stay in a guest house nearby. This is our go-to for a meal or a snack or a beer. You’ll be happy here!More

I'll be able to tell my grandkids that I ate at Beer Komachi before it became a huge enterprise. In January 2019, it will close for two months and when it reopens, it will double in size. I hope it doesn't lose its wonderful cosiness...or its inventive ability to use every single spare bit of space. The beers are the best - everything from IPAs to stouts, in a city which sometimes seems as if it awash with Asahi and Sapporo. Because of its tininess, you end up chatting to half the bar, which is quite fun as locals are fantastically generous with suggestions of what to do when in Kyoto for ten days (top tip: return to Komachi). The beer is not the only good aspect here though - the food is simple and delicious and a bargain, including a plate of smoked goodies with fish, eggs, turnip, fish roe. A very happy afternoon in here tasting great local beer and hearty food. The woman who was running the place on the day we went was wearing a Mikkeller shirt. That's the legendary Copenhagen bar and brewery. A great sign.More

We visited right before New Year’s and it was snowing outside- this place was warm and welcoming, despite having a small space. We ordered their pickle dish to share and it was nothing exciting but did the job. They had Sticky Fingaz from Kumazawa Brewing...on tap and despite being positioned as a NE (I assume New England) IPA, this is most definitely a San Diego style IPA and it was outstanding. We are huge fans of Ballast Point, Karl Strauss, Mike Hess (all from San Diego) and Track 7 (Sacramento), and this beer was hazy and on point. They’ll be closing to expand for a few months and it will be worth the wait when they reopen (in March, I believe), it’s a must-visit if you’re a craft beer fan.More
