Great ramen with thick soup. I ordered japanese beef option. It was delicious. You make your order before at the order machine and there is english menu available. It was very convenient.

Unassuming place in a small alley. No English sign; just follow Google photo. Short line when we got there. Ordered in a machine. In the waiting line there was a sakura tree that was blooming. So nice! The place has 12 seats (or 10?). VERY...THICK broth even by Japan standards. I've had some better ramen but the sliced wagyu beef was the highlight here. We tasted beef intestines too and they were really strong tasting.More

Probably among the best ramen and tsukemen we tasted during our trip, with a mouth-wateringly savoury and rich broth that will leave you craving for more. The portions are good, and the shop itself is sleek, definitely aimed towards a younger crowd. It's located just...a stone's throw from Karasuma metro station (Hankyu line), and the door can be a bit difficult to find for non-japanese speakers. The vending machine operates in english as well as japanese, so no problems here. Small tip: there is a condiment drawer under the bar at every seating space (we only found this out on our second visit).More

The shop a abit hard to find since the signboard was in Japanese. Check out the pictures on google and look around for the same signage. It is also located along an inside alley. So a little out of the way. I ordered the Tsukemen...with basic ramen (regular size) with beef intestines. My friend ordered Ramen with citron noodels (regular size) with pork and beer. Overall costed 2500 yen for 2 person. I recommend getting wither the pork or beef because the beef intestines were just okay in my opinion. Also, the Regular size were a little small, so maybe order large size. All the menu can be ordered from the ordering machine which has english. once you paid into the machine, just pick up the tickets and give them to the cooks once there are free seats for you to sit.More

We were recommended this place by a local bartender and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is located on a back ally off of a side street and was a little hard to locate. There are few signs and non in English. There’s a tiny...little door next to a foggy window that’s covered with a bamboo screen. I kept seeing locals walk in and thought this had to be the place. We walked in to see a vending machine and a line leading into a small courtyard where more guests were waiting. We waiting about 20 minutes and it was worth it. We had the traditional, a fishy and thick broth with delicious pork belly. A little fishy for my tastes but it was still amazing. It was a fun hipster joint with great music and you could tell that it was a local favorite. I would go just for the experience.More

What an interesting Ramen! Particularly like the version they did which is eaten by dipping the Ramen into the soup based they have prepared separately. The beef is particularly good and so is the pork! Get hungry before you go!

This little place lives up to the hype - the tonkotsu broth was so thick, unctuous and velvety- simply amazing. The broth is based on chicken and seafood (which sounds weird but it works) and the char sui portions are huge - no thin slivers...here, my pieces were as thick as my thumb. Just before serving they get the once over with the torch to crisp them up a bit - so delicious! I ordered extra pork and got the larger bowl and that seemed about right - I was not super full walking away - but every mouthful was something to behold. I will be thinking about this ramen for a while.More

Dashed there after a morning of sightseeing and made it just in time to be the last customer before it closed. It is hard to find and you wouldn't have guessed that there's a ramen restaurant inside! Asked a local walking along that lane and...she almost directed me to what must've been another shop elsewhere (which I'm thankful I didn't follow cos I'd have missed this place). True to the reputation it deserves, great ramen and yes, best I had for that Kyoto trip. My husband had the dry noodles with beef, which he enjoyed tremendously. I had the innards with soup, which was delicious too. Even the wait outside in the rear garden was fun while you whet up your appetite waiting for your turn.More

Maybe my favorite tasting Ramen on my Japan trip, I went to about 5. I got the Japanese beef ramen and it was amazing, never had a ramen taste like that before, you'll definitely enjoy it. The staff was nice too and helpful. I really...liked the set up also, short stools and a tray for different spices and chopsticks/other utensils.More

I first found out about this restaurant from a "10 Places to Go in Kyoto" video then I read the reviews here on TripAdvisor. The place is well hidden in way I'd call an alleyway but if you have Google Maps and enter the English...name "Wajoryomen Sugari" it'll take you right there. I was lucky - just by chance my AirBnB room was a 10 minute walk! When you get in the alleyway just look for a line coming out of a door - a good sign. Patrons consisting of locals and curious well-read foreigners of all persuasions are lining up to select their meal from a screen displayed menu - don't worry you can select "English" if that's your language of choice. The menu consists of the cut of the noodles you'd like, toppings such as pork and eggs, etc. Once you've made your selection and paid your bill (1000-1600 yen average - about $10-$16 USD) you'll have to sit in a chair in the courtyard until it's your turn. The restaurant is very small-seats no more than 10 but the turnover is pretty fast. While you're waiting you'll be treated to the best electronic hip-hop music I heard in Japan as you watch the ramen-istas perform their magic and watch the customers slurp up their creation. Prior to this visit the only ramen I had was the dried-add-water sodium blocks I lived off of while in school...what a difference! I had the opportunity to sample the real stuff from different establishments while on my visit to Japan and this had to be the dopest of them all! The broth had the thick consistency of an authentic New Orleans gumbo, truly a meal in itself. This is not a sit-and-dine chit-chatty kind of place - you eat your ramen and go. This only downside was the 500 yen I paid for a beer from the machine was not shown on the ticket and was not honored when my bowl was delivered, minor technicality. Overall, between the hip, cozy atmosphere and the food I give Wajoryomen Sugari a 10. I think you will too!More
