It's in an old building, but that contributes to the classical atmosphere, and I was able to enjoy the atmosphere of a long-established restaurant. The lunch options ranged from reasonable to slightly luxurious. The dishes were simple but labor-intensive, and all of them were very easy to eat, so I would definitely like to return.

A Ukrainian friend recommended this place to me. What a revelation. Great food from the Caucuses region, including Ukrainian, Georgian, Uzbek and Russian dishes such as Borsche, Cabbage rolls, Beef Stroganoff, Kiev Cutlet, Piroshki. The ambiance and decor is great. I tried all the dishes in the photos and was stuffed! A Georgian friend also goes there regularly. The Georgian wine was excellent. They also have two restaurants in Shinjuku (called Sungari). I usually go when I am in Kyoto. If you are lucky enough to meet the owner, Ms. Kato, she can tell you a fascinating story about the history of the restaurant. It opened in 1957. Смачного (Bon appetite in Ukrainian). 100% recommended

Founder Koshiro Kato (from Kyoto City) opened the restaurant in Gion Shijo, Kyoto in 1972 after returning from former Manchuria. Koshiro Kato is also the father of singer Tokiko Kato. The name of the restaurant comes from the tie-up between the cities of Kyoto and Kiev as a sister city of friendship for cultural exchange and goodwill, and the name of the restaurant was changed to Kiev. I had lunch. The beets were very easy to eat and delicious borscht. Cabbage rolls are completely different from the sauces we usually eat.

Visited this restaurant for comfort food in Kyoto. Great environment and food. Maksym was a great waiter and helped me order a delicious Caucasian chicken.

I'm Russian-American and was curious to see what Russian food is like in Japan. Unfortunately due to show tickets, I only had time to try a couple of appetizers but they were exceptional. The pirozhki and pelmeni were a wonderful fusion of Russian/Ukrainian flavors and Japanese lightness. Phenomenal! Service was exceptional too, they could not be more accommodating. I will be back next time I am in Kyoto for sure! Wheelchair access: the restaurant is on the 6th floor of a larger building and there is an elevator, however, it's extremely tiny do ymmv. The restaurant itself is spacious and has comfortable Western style seating. The bathroom is up a large step and too narrow for a wheelchair.

Borsch served in this restaurant was fine and similar to the taste I had in Moscow 30years ago, under Perestroika. It means tasty beetroot and cabbage soup with less ingredients. In a way, I guess, I could estimate it authentic. Other dishes like Zakuski, Pirozhki, Beef Storoganoff were also fine, though they are Japanized more or less. I guess the difference of the tastes from original would depends on lack or less of Russian ingredients like Smetana(スメタナ), Kvass(クヴァス), Pickling Vegetables and Mushrooms (野菜や茸のピクルス)and Fish Marinade (ex Herring, Sturgeon)(ニシンやチョウザメのマリネ). It couldn't be helped. Travel in summer, Book the seats at Rooftop Beer Garden. OPEN 12:00-21:00LO

I was very glad, that I could find in Kyoto a restaurant with Russian food. I wished my partner to taste Russian kitchen. But actually the kitchen was not Russian at all. It was interesting, but It was completely different from the one, you can actually taste in Russia or Ukraine. The taste was not similar to the Russian kitchen, also was not similar the way , how the ingredients were served. It was for me a pity, that it is so difficult to find the place, where you could taste the actual kitchen of another, not Asian countries. But, still, thank you to the restaurant for being in Kyoto )

Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
