Food and atmosphere are authentic. The staff is very busy and not particularly friendly. Hygiene could be improved.

After all the incredible food and service we have experienced elsewhere this was a real let down. Service, portions, taste and cost were all a let down. We suggest the owners: reconsider the way they pour their beer - they were half tide with almost...half a glass of head; reconsider the compulsory 300 yen per person charge for the saucer of food (it was unenjoyable and we did not want it) and also reconsider the numerous “rules“ at the start of the menu (all guest must buy drink, all guest must leave after 30 min if no food order etc). Also in our opinion the food needs serious work considering the quality that can be found elsewhere.More

We wanted to like this place but the food was just ok and the service was “short”. From the moment we walked in we felt like Gaijin. We ordered a some dishes and 1 cup of sake as my partner doesn’t drink, and were very...surprised when the bill came. Over AU$100, nearly 80,000 yen. Could have been much better spent elsewhere. For a neighbourhood izakawa I would be surprised if Japanese could afford this for a mid week (tues) dinner.More

***STAY AWAY*** So here’s the mixed review. The food was actually good. We enjoyed everything we ate and I wont lie about that. That being said I still say stay far away! This is the true definition of a TOURIST TRAP. First thing is they...try to put you upstairs where there is a table charge when even if downstairs has none. They don’t tell you this and it doesn’t matter if there is space downstairs they will try to put you upstairs no matter what. If that’s not bad enough, the prices are quite high for what they serve when it came time to get the bill she came with a paper written on a price that was way too much compared to what we ordered. We told her that it was too much and she started to argue with us telling us there is tax. We looked through the menu and they were overcharging us by ¥100 and the tax rate did not make sense. We looked through the menu and they were overcharging us by ¥100 and the tax rate did not make sense. Also, they have a one drink minimum and they charge ¥100 for “special water” which was just tap water. However the Japanese people next to us got regular water for free... not really tourist friendly and don’t get me started on how rude the old lady (still wearing her dirty crocs) was. Although the food is good please do yourself a favor and go find another place with great food, in Japan that’s not too hard to find.More

We try and avoid the tourist places and whilst the line at 545pm was already long for the gyoza shop this place welcomed us and was immediately serving us sake. Good menu. English available for those who need it and the food was delicious. Some...might say the host was bossy but we say to them wait at the door to wait for a table, if you are a foreigner just hold two seconds and they will be accomodating. Food, sake and company was authentic.More

Having been initially put off by negative reviews about service, we were so pleased with our experience that we went back for a second evening. Service was prompt, friendly, informal, and the food was some of the best we have had in Japan so far. We...would recommend the sable fish- delicious!More

My 4 th day in my first Japan trip. Past 3 days were great. I like to try new restaurants and tastes. Trip advisor you failed me greatly. Saw a long line walking past the restaurant. There was no English menu posted outside only saw...a Japanese one. Looked thru windows saw sushi looked up food pics on trip advisor. Stood outside waited 30 minutes before a older lady came out to take names. First impression was not good. She was wearing soiled clothing and pair of Croc like shoes that had black paste of soil on it. We waited some more we were next saw empty seats in first floor. She called us directed us to second floor didn't know why when there were empty seats in first floor. Maybe because we only communicated in English looked our ethnic Chinese. My friends were worried no English menu posted outside. Walking through the first floor my shoes got stuck into gluey slime in ground. Literally lifted my shoes and they squeaked. After being seated that was when everything just went extremely bad. I felt like I was being extorted having an English menu that stated every single person that sat on 2 and 3 floor had to order a drink, a dish , and pay 300 yen for one dish that had 6 pieces of fried pork. Why am I paying 900 yen for 6 pieces of pork when I can order a dish I can eat. And why do I have to order a drink when I have bottle of green tea in my bag? Why do I have to have the waitress glare at me because I am saying I do not want to order a drink? I did not ask to be seated on this second floor when there were seats on first floor. I have a doctorate degree in my field so I do question greatly this kind of treatment. All I want is to order food eat and leave. On average I can spend up to hundreds of USD on a meal. Money is the issue. It's questionable on many ends why am I subjected to this torture. We ordered the 3 cokes but the nasty waitress stuck her finger in one cup touching the coke wouldn't change it. After much discussions we decided to just get up pay and leave.I had to haggle with the waiter to pay only for 3 cokes and the 900 yen side dish. He was trying to force me to pay for 3 orders. I wasn't going to back down was ready for police to be called. I guess they got the message and let us pay and leave. It very outrageous for the 2020 Olympic host to allow their businessesto treat any "English " tourist like this especially us the Chinese Americans.More

Be sure to make a reservation because there was a line up to get in but if you have a reservation you’ll go straight to the front. The food was delicious, especially the eggplant soaked in miso. Cosy but glad we went.

My husband I went there after reading some reviews. The place was very crowded but the wait turned out to be short. It is an izakaya with lots of small plates of food. The sashimi was good, but everything else seemed average. Honestly just walk...into another other izakaya and don't bother with the wait. The service is not friendly at all.More

Previously saw a huge line of people waiting in line the night before. Then we were walking home and passed by when it happened that the line wasn’t as long so we decided to try. We were happy with our decision. Enjoyed our meals and...sake. Reasonable price although slightly bothered by the smokers inside the restaurant but it’s quite common in Japan Izakaya .More

I went there with my husband and son and we were super lucky as they had 3 places by the counter and did not have to wait at all. The place is a traditional Japanese sake place with kitchen. The staff is very nice but...they struggle a bit with English (the English menu helped a lot!). Only cash accepted. The chef is simply amazing! We had a delicious giant raw oyster, a super fresh sashimi, a great tuna cutlet and some very well fried mixed veg and shrimp tempura. We then asked the chef to cook for us what he likes the best and he cooked for us nasu dengaku, a special eggplant dish. It is definitely one of the best experience we had in Kyoto!More

We tried to visit here at our last night in Kyoto. 20mins waiting in the queue was worth! Price is reasonable and food was simple but fresh. We will return and recommend our friends! One weak point it they don’t accept credit cards

This place was recommended by a friend, and the queue outside at 5.30 told the story. Get here early if you don't want to wait. It is not obvious by the signage, only a small sign in English at the curtained front door, but if...you are close by and see a queue, that's it. The beer is cold and the food is exquisite. The Sashimi was spectacular, as were the Scallops. The half eggplant baked was also divine. Not a lot of English, but enough to get you by, and they do have a hand written English menu. Visit if near here.... you will not be disappointed.More

My partner and I went to this restaurant at about 7pm on a Monday in early June. We were drawn in by the lively atmosphere coming from inside. There was a small line - two parties before us - and it ended up being quite...a wait because one party was fairly large and we had to wait for 2 couples to leave to seat them. Overall maybe 30 minute wait. One inside we got an English menu. We ordered 3 types of fried fish, jellyfish from the sour menu, 'something like aubergine' and grilled bamboo shoot (last three - see pictures attached). All was great apart from the fish, which was both tasteless and dry. We were surprised by getting bamboo shoots in husks. These were great - we had no idea how to eat them (aye like artichokes). We thought e made a valiant effort but as we asked for the bill one of the servers told us to eat more of it, which was funny! Overall good place for the ambience and nice foodMore
