We stopped just for a sandwich, the place looked great despite being right across the street from Daitoku-ji temple complex, and it was. They understood and accommodated my wife's allergy, preparing a different side dish and presentation for her (the sandwich was served on a big plate with two small side dishes and a salad!). Delicious food and really nice friendly service and atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Located opposite to the entrance of daitokuji temple this is the ideal place to have a small tasty meal, a coffee or another drink before or after visiting the temple. The house is nicely decorated inside and outside, offers comfortable seats in tasteful, cozy surroundings. Food and drinks I had were all very good, in particular in comparison to the price. Very pollute, efficient service. Highly recommended.

It is a cafe in front of the main gate of Daitoku-ji, which is famous for Zen temple. There are dishes using natural ingredients such as Kyoto vegetables and olive oil, and sweets related to Daitokuji. The staff is kind and there is also a terrace seat.

Amazing place, like out of time. Facing the temple, delicious home-cooked meals, attentive service, taxi in front of the restaurant as soon as you open the door. only flaw: mix with Bordeaux pastries, canelé (we're kidding... we love it... but we're from Bayonne!!!) Absolutely go there!

Cafe du Mon is without a doubt one of the best lunch spots in north Kyoto. Years of coming here in both spring and fall, and every visit has been surprisingly different and wonderful ... always an excellent meal, unpretentious cheerful atmosphere and attentive staff ... I guess you could say I love this place ! Dining here is an indispensable part of the Daitokuji garden-hopping experience.

Firstly had a coffee here while visiting Daitokuji Zen and then decided to go back and have lunch. Simply delicious lunch of salad and tomatoes and peppers on rice. Lovely lovely staff. A great spot to have lunch.

Such a lovely cafe we stumbled across after visiting the Daitoku-ji Somon Buddhist temple. Lovely staff and one of the best meals I have had in Japan over the past 5 days. Also the lovely additional touches of origami cranes with your meal.

What a great find. We had been visiting the Daitoku-ji Temple and found this quaint cafe at one of the entrances/exits. We had a sandwich, salad and smoothie and hot chocolate. All were fresh and tasty. The hot chocolate ranked with the best and the smoothie was equally as good. Peaceful atmosphere with cafe music playing in the background. The waiter was friendly and super helpful. Highly recommend to come and spend some time eating here and soaking up the quaint atmosphere.

Great food, ambience, staff and a petite Chef - do the chocolate Canele - almost as good as the ones in Bordeaux. Mains were also great.

Really enjoyed our lunch here after a morning visiting temples. Really good homemade food, so worth the short wait. Vegetarian options. And extras- salad, soup, books about Kyoto to look at and gifts of origami birds. Thanks, a lunch to remember.

I had the Kyoto curry, my hubbie had the chicken and rice, my daughter had the need bolgnese. I’ve been to France twice and this has so far been our favorite French meal. All three dishes were delicious. Highly recommend the matcha latte. This is run by a very sweet family who loves to the travel the world. Great find next to the temple. Highly recommend.

Me and my friend were looking for a place to eat after visiting the Daitoku-ji, and we stumbled upon this Cafe right in front of one of the temple's entrance and we were undecided since my friend is vegan, but we decided to go in after we were invited by this nice shy guy(who was a new employee), and even when they didn't have a vegan option, the czechian girl(sorry, I didn't see her name) who assisted us was so kind and comprehensive that she helped my friend to find an appropriate dish without some ingredients. The place is full of good vibes, I felt so confortable, all the employees were so kind and the day's recommendation (which I chose) was so delicious!!! Definitely will come back in my next trip to Kyoto. Pd. As souvenirs the nice girl gave us origami cranes that now I keep on my desk. 😊

Good food, low price and an efficient, charming service. We recommend it. The name, however, does not make any sense :)

We had a wonderful lunch sitting out on the terrace at this little cafe right across the street from the entrance to the Daitoku-ji temple complex. The food was delicious and the service was friendly (they speak a little bit of English). My very favorite thing was the the canele cake made with Daitokuji natto--(which are dried and salty fermented soy beans supposedly invented by the Buddhist priest Ikkyu)--the sweet and savory combo is terrific.

Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
