We stayed in Japan for a month and tried a few tempura restaurants in that period. This restaurant looks fancy, the staff has traditional clothing and makes u feel welcome. The ingredients are raw in front of you and the “chef” prepares it (ingredient battered...and deep-fried) and places its on your plate. The taste is ok, totally not special and worth the money. We took 2 menus and paid around 14k yen. Later that week we ate for half of the price with much better taste in smaller restaurant. So my advice skip this place and get better value for your money.More

We came here before our train to try tempura specifically, but totally disappointed. Forget the totally overpriced food with limited choices, but the food itself wasn’t good. Tempura wasn’t crispy and actually quite oily. Even other places we’ve been to that didn’t specialise in tempura...made it ten times better. Try something else and pass on this place for sure.More

I was at Kyoto station today and wanted to check out this tempura restaurant. Had abit of a wait but the food area was jammed with people on Sunday so if you have a choice try another day. Food was excellent, the tempura was light...and with a perfect crunch I was able to sit at the bar area and watch the food being made. The cook was very nice and assisted me with what to dip into what, etc. I had shrimp, some type of thin fish, not sure what it was but was delicious. Various vegetables, small round onions, eggplant and broccoli. The final was a chopped shrimp and tempura battered pancake...again everything was excellent Would definitely recommendMore

Tenichi specializes in tempura dishes. The restaurant is spacious and clean with amicable staff. One can enjoy freshly made tempura if seated at the counter, in front of the open kitchen. Tempura lunch sets are delicious and of great value.

Excellent tempura cooked right in front of you. The shrimp were large, prawn sized portions. The staff was friendly and they have a menu with photos so you can make your order with English and pointing. They have a range of dishes to choose from...but we would go back for the shrimp tempura.More

We had lunch here. Selected two different set lunch menus. All with Vegetable, shrimp and fish tempura, varies in quantity. Rice, pickles, miso soup are part of the set. Food came quite quickly, they are tasty, not expensive.

We wanted to eat in the train station area and had a limited amount of time. This restaurant is also recommended in Lonely Planet. What a disappointment! The set menus start at around 4500 Yen (which will get you two great meals in many other...restaurants), so we opted for a la carte - which is when we found out the price is per piece - e.g. close to 1000 yen for a single (!) tempura prawn. The food itself was fine, but no better than much less expensive restaurants, and the ambience is well - train station. If you have to eat at the train station, look elsewhere.More

This is one of the best tempura. Sat at the counter. Ordered the set. Watch the chef cook. Besides cooking, he is also attentive to making sure your tea is top up. Chef explains what is being serve and how to eat, i.e. with salt...or sauce or plain. Not greasy. Crispy and hot. Can add other items to the set but pay more.More

This restaurant was wonderful, located on the top floor of the Isetan Department Store next to the Kyoto Train Station. Our guide explained to the chef that we had certain dietary restrictions, and the chefs were responsive to those requests. We sat at the counter...and watched as each piece of food was fried, then immediately put on our plates. It was crispy and not greasy.More

This holiday, we found ourselves using the dining facilities in the massive station complexes including one place in Kyoto where we paid money for a ticket before we joined a queue outside before being shown a couple of seats at the bar. This was the...first time we tried such a place. Worked well. But this place was much posher. It is located in the Isetan building in the Eat Paradise area on the 11th floor of the Kyoto Station building. Bit of a challenge to find as there was no English name showing outside the restaurant when we were there but there is a map showing restaurants in that area in English and it’s fairly logical to find after that. Had a short wait outside and then shown inside. We were looked after very well. Tempura was excellent. And we had a bill as we're used to and paid at the end! Normal service resumed. As an aside, we found the restaurants in the train stations a revelation — you could have a very basic but satisfying meal if in a rush or too tired to change or classier restaurants where you would want to make an effort. Sometimes on a high floor giving you the benefit of a great view as well.More
