The place was worn out and not clean. The server was unfriendly. The food was horrid. I only ate the rice. The bathrooms were awful. There seemed to be locals there but I don't understand why they would eat there when there are so many...other nice places to eat in Kyoto.More

went in as the whole look of the restaurant was retro. taste was average. nothing special but not bad either. price was reasonable compared with other neighborhood sukiyaki. have read reviews that they are racist restaurant. but in my opinion, they are just not interested...at all for customer satisfaction. the retro look seems to come from the same reason. they have many dirty spots on the carpect on the stairs. no smiles from workers. toillette is not well managed. ordered 3 x better meat. meat came in a set of cheaper meat and better meat. but the bettermeat had only 2 pieces. asked the waitress who took the order. the answer was it is by weight. if you want to take a sukiyaki cooking class, it is a good place as it is a do-it-yourself shop with easy to learn cooking manual in japanese and english.More

The owner of this place (or the old man at the counter who seemed like the owner) refused to serve us because my boyfriend was Chinese. This was the first time we experienced this kind of blatant racism in our otherwise pleasant Japan trip so...far.More

They don’t welcome Taiwanese, Chinese and Korean. They told us no available, but let Japanese inside.

In the middle of the bustling shopping district of Teramachi, there is a retro looking sukiyaki place called Kimura. If you are looking for a fine premium Wagyu beef sukiyaki, this is not the place to go. The restaurant has only two choices of meet....We chose what Japanese call rosu (rib). Sukiyaki is cooked in the Kansai (western part of Japan as opposed to Kanto, the eastern part of Japan) style using sugar and soy sauce. In Kanto area, the sauce called Warishita (a mixture of mirin, soy sauce, dashi and sugar) is used. After your attendant do initial cooking, you are on your own. It's part of enjoying sukiyaki. You just need to keep an eye to make sure that your sukiyaki is not too simmer down or drying up (a pitcher of water is provided). I would say that the whole meal was good. Sitting on tatami and eating sukiyaki beef dipped in raw egg gives you somehow an authentic sense of Japanese tradition. If the restaurant does not serve good sukiyaki meal, it wouldn't have lasted 90 years.More

I searched for sukiyaki places and they were very expensive! I just wanted the experience for my family of four and a decent meal. I got both and then some. The staff so polite, kind and gracious. Able to speak English. The meal amazing but...we did order the premium beef. I would go here again. And you don't have to sit on the floor,Japanese style. They right away asked if anyone would like a stool. That was me and my bad knee.More

The night we visited we seemed to be the only foreigners. The room and furnishings are dated, but the food was good. Service (in Japanese only) was efficient. Value was good relative to other sukiyaki options. No frills, but this was exactly the experience we...were looking for.More

We went to Sukiyaki Kimura on recommendation from our hosts at the hostel we were staying in and we enjoyed the authenticity and great Japanese hospitality from this mom and pop run shop. It can be difficult to order if you are know zero Japanese,...but I believe they had an English menu for us foreigners. We picked the base of the sukiyaki that we wanted and then got to add any other additional ingredients we wanted. In addition to our food, we got sake and had a delicious lunch! This place is very traditional, as if you were entering somebody's home. You enter and take off your shoes in exchange for house slippers before going upstairs to be seated. Once upstairs, you sit on the tatami mats with low tables with the sukiyaki skillet and carafes of water. Once you order, the ingredients come out super fast and if you need assistance, the staff will help you prepare the sukiyaki in the right order. Otherwise, you can follow the pictures on the menu to get it right. It was delicious and we kept order more food and sake, as we prolonged our lunch. Really the best part about sukiyaki is watching the food simmer in the sticky sauce and dip all your cooked food in a raw egg. It really makes sukiyaki so special. This place gets a thumbs up for me and I am glad we ate here as I probably would not have ventured here had it not been for a recommendation from a friend. There are so many restaurants in Kyoto that it is hard to figure out what to eat sometimes, but this one is location right in the center of Teramachi and there are many shops nearby after you are stuffed from sukiyaki. Enjoy!More

Great Sukiyaki with very tender pieces of meat and nice tofu; all ingredients were of great quality and the portions were decent too; service was efficient and very friendly; interior is quite dated but was definitely not our priority - the food was, and was...absolutely delicious; good price quality ratio; recommended!More

3rd visit to Kyoto altogether out of 4 Japan travels, 3 head table first try of Sukiyaki in Japan, elaborate knowledge of washoku the furnite looks stuck like never changed since the 80s at dinner set menu prive starting at 3100 Yen per head no...foreigners / gaijin tourists would I be back? maybe not because of price value - given other options in kyoto in this price range this dinner wasn't sophisticated enough, however sukiyaki may not be meant like thisMore
