The welcome was friendly, the beef was tender and tasty, and the stone-grilled garlic rice wasone of the best sides I've ever had. It's do-it your-self bbq at its best.

I have to say that I had heard great things about Japanese meat, being a meet lover myself i was not disappointed with the quality. The only thing i was disappointed from this place was the actual quantity served, you could ask from 80gr of meat at 20-30Eur depending on the quality. For me it was worth it as a... More

I was expecting a fabulous japanese wagyu since matsuzaka is well known for the best meat.. But after eating them here, I was deeply dissapointed because the beef is so so.. it's taste like other japanese wagyu. So i'm suspecting it's not the real matsuzaka beef they selling at the resto..

Found this one on Tripadvisor and as a recommandation from the Hotel Concierge as well. Nice place with excellent Beef that you can cook on your own. Service is very friendly (as usual in Japan). If you're in the area, don't hesitate to eat there

We had a very good dinner at What's. It is a great place, very nice and cosy. Beef is fantastic and team is very kind. A place I definitively recommend.

You cook your own food at this Japanese steakhouse, which features top cuts of beef. It makes for an interesting and delicious meal. The secret is to cook the very thinly sliced meat quickly. We enjoyed our meal, although we wish we had ordered more vegetables. Good service.

We were recommended this by a Japanese chef and it did not disappoint. Wonderful steak and wine with great service. They provide you with your own booth so you have complete privacy and it's very comfortable. If you are ever in Kyoto you must go to this place.

We chose to go to 'What's' because a) the reviews were good, b) we are carnivores and c) it was just round the corner from our hotel and we were not disappointed. We were shown to a booth which had a gas bbq in the centre of the table and it was nicely private. We chose a set meal and... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
