After seeing *that* viral video of Chef Yukimura making his famous omurice, I knew we had to put it on our list of things to try in Kyoto. Prior to our trip, I did a bit of research and noticed that they required reservations 2...weeks before you go. Although I was online literally the MINUTE the system was open for our dates, most of the reservations had already been taken and there were only a few time slots left! As soon as we got there, we understood the need for the reservation system. Every seat in the cozy restaurant was taken. Not that there were many seats. They had only 1 table, with the rest of the space being snug bar seating. This allowed the chef to prepare your meal in front of you in a personalized performance. On that note, I think this is classified more as an experience than a meal. The high price reflects, not the quality of the food, but the show. While the food was decent, that alone would not be worth the hefty price tag (it's just omurice!). The real star of the show was Chef Yukimura (and his sous chefs); he danced, twirled, sang, and did his tricks, all while you got to spectate from the bar. It was spectacular, but the novelty wears off as soon as you've experienced it. After all, would you be as enthused watching a show the second, third, fourth time? Overall, if you haven't seen it already, I'd definitely recommend going (and reserving early!); however, if you're just looking for omurice, you're probably better off trying somewhere else for a better bang for your buck.More

Omurice is pretty good (especially the special brown sauce). Try to get a seat at the counter instead of booth seating so you can be friends with the chef

Very disappointed with this restaurant. We came just before opening and were told to come back in an half and a half. Fine with us! Came back 10 minutes before our reservation and then were told to wait in line. Had to order our drinks...and food in the line and was then taken into the restaurant 15 minutes after our reservation. Didn’t even get to sit at the bench where the cooking and main reason for coming takes place. Had to sit in a tiny table off to the side with another group while the other guests were able to watch the show. We were allowed to get up and stand behind the others to watch our food being made which was entertaining. Food came out and was barely hot, very small and quite average. The worst part is how expensive it all was. Was the most expensive and most average meal we’ve had in JapanMore

This was one of the more expensive meals I had in Japan, and the quality does not match the cost. But I guess the show is what matters here, not the food. We’ve probably all seen the clips on Youtube. And the owner seems like...a nice guy. His colleagues however leave much to be desired. I of course had the omurice, which is fried rice with mushrooms, onion, and soybeans. I can’t say I was terribly impressed. I've heard there's chicken in this dish, but I couldn't taste any. The soybeans were undercooked. It’s topped with a runny Japanese style omelette and then drenched in a demi-glace which is rather bland, tasting a bit bitter if anything. One whole omurice is 2 700 yen. You clearly pay 700 for the food and 2 000 for the show. I had a half sized portion for 1 450 yen which was quite enough for me. Come here for the novelty and getting some nice pictures of this internet celebrity cooking for you (although he seemed a bit perplexed that I didn’t want to take any pictures), just don’t expect too much from the food. It's a bit tricky to find this place, but walk through the narrow alley right next to Ponto-cho Beer Hall and Kichi Kichi is to your right. 2 stars for the food and 4 stars for the show.More

Show is good. The owner has great energy and clearly loves the camera. But the food was average and you pay way to much for it. We had half the serve of rice, beef stew and a small beer and it was around $70... Most...expensive meal we have paid for in Japan so far and definitely not worth it. If you want the Instagram shot then go for but but otherwise you have seen it on your feed many times before.More

Had a reservation at 2pm. Got rejected when I showed up 10 minutes prior because apparently they close at 2pm... Fix your situation, then maybe I'll come back to try your tasteless burnt garbagerice. Waste of time.

This is the 4th time I come to this lovely joint, and I can never have a Kyoto experience without this amazing, amusing dinner. From a professional that works in the egg industry, I see this as Kyoto's #1 dining destination. Chef Motokichi gives us...an entertaining, hilarious show, and his antics get better every time I go. He has an awesome supporting crew, including the excellent Nana, and they work as precisely as a gold medal synchronised swim team. Not easy to get reservations, but if you get, you pay for a superb omurice (it is NOT salted as it may look), or great ox tongue and other options, and a well-spirited, light-hearted display of showmanship and chefdom. If in Kyoto, I must always come to Kichi Kichi.More

We had an 8:15 reservation and were asked if we could in and out by 9. The chef is fun, he plays good music, but the food was the worst meal I had in Kyoto. Paid $90 for 2 people, had much better for half...that. Sorry, I hate to bust chops, but it wasnt worth it.More

The chef is eccentric and makes the trip totally worth it. Food is a bit on the pricier side, but the experience is once in a lifetime and you won't find it anywhere else. It's like a food & show in one. The chef and...staff are all very friendly and on the ball. The menu is limited, but you can get all options in either meat or vegetarian. MAKE A RESERVATION. You may get lucky with a walk in, but really, make a reservation because usually that is not a thing.More

I am not sure; I only know there’s a vegetarian choice. Perhaps you can email them to find out. The boss speaks English.

You can try to email (unable to provide email address in TripAdvisor), however if it's for this Sun, I'm afraid you should actually book at least 2-3weeks in advance. Good luck!

Sometimes they accept walk-ins and sometimes they don’t. It depends on how many people are in line, and if there are spare seats. The restaurant is very small and has limited seating capacity. If you do a walk-in, you will... More
