We first learned of Tempura Matsu from the book “Rice, Noodles, Fish” which describes many aspects of Japanese cuisine. One of the chapters deals with Mr. Matsuno, a local chef who has a long history of preparing Kaiseki dinners in Kyoto in his small restaurant...More

Tempura Matsu's meal is a dazzling work of modern Japanese art, and simply the best meal of my 9 day trek across Japan + one of the best of my entire life. I showed up to my reservation feeling a little tense, since some reviewers...More

This really isn't a tempura restaurant, maybe it was originally? But who cares! They serve wonderfully original and fresh Japanese cuisine in a refined "kaiseki" style but served in a relaxed "izakaya" ambiance. Try to get a seat at the counter to see how the...More

The fact that this place has no stars from the French guide is criminal. I thought this was better than Chihana, in which we also ate in during our stay. Most dishes were excellent and many had an interesting twist. The family who run it...More

This meal could have been 100% worth the cost and travel time, but ultimately the experience left a poor taste in my mouth. We weren't staying in a traditional hotel, so we did not have a concierge to book for us. We tried, multiple times...More

The first time I visited Tempura Matsu was in autumn 2011 and I keep on coming back everytime I visit Kyoto and probably I had 10 visits for now. Remember to reserve the counter seats (probably only good for a party of 2-3 people) as...More

Fantastic meal in a casual atmosphere. Watching the chefs prepare each dish from the counter stools was more fun than dining at a table. Cash only.

We had read the books, the blogs, the reviews and new this would be a special meal. However, it far exceeds any expectation we had. It is not just about the modern kaiseki, but to have some of the best food on the planet in...More

This is a late review but we just had to make sure Tempura Matsu got the recognition it deserves! Sorry to locals in advance as us tourists start coming here! I have to say even now that we have left Japan we easily drool just...More

I am not sure how much lunch costs there - I suspect it is the same as at dinner. In the evening I did not see any children, I suppose it depends on how old they are. The menu is fixed so I doubt that there would be any... More
