Difficult to choose in Pontocho for a visitor. Randomly went in and not disappointed. Ate inside because the terrace was full. Very nice view of the river. Ate sashimi then tempura and teriyaki chicken. All excellent. Service friendly, English menus, all good! For the adventurous visitor one half is seated on the floor on tatami mats. The other half is... More

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting Kyoto and loved it. We ordered from the regular menu and enjoyed our entrees very much. The service was impeccable and our table facing the river was very romantic. We also shared a tasty and fresh salad and enjoyed assorted desserts. We had a lovely evening. The dinner was a... More

We stumbled upon the Japanese one ( I understood there are 2). Managed to get a table in 10 min and the food was awesome! The set menu with 9 courses was a very good value for us. 12.000 with 9 courses on that location, including 4 drinks and the cover charge. The casual area next to the bar, even... More

If you would like some good Italian food for a change of pace while in Kyoto, you won't go wrong here. I had the salad Caprese which was absolutely delicious and my husband enjoyed a Caesar salad. We both had pasta and it could not have been better had we been in New York. I have been told that the... More

We returned two plates and partially ate two more. The food came at irregular intervals. The kitchen was unsanitary (I work in foodservice.) They where clearly overwhelmed. Worst restaurand I've ever been in, worldwide. I no longer trust Tripadvisor.

Nice restaurant with a wonderful view over the river. The food is good but the servings are quite small. The price is acceptable for this hot tourist spot. The staff is friendly but the servings are quite slow.

If you like fried food you are in the right place.. They put everything in the same oil and everything tastes the same. Bad presentation and they even try to charge you the additional drinks. We don't recommend you this place. Unlike you are looking for touristic over-price food.

We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance in one of Kyoto's many laneways. It has a lovely ambiance (we sat in the casual area near the bar). We especially loved the fillet beef with 3 sauces so much so we ordered another serving & then returned a couple of nights later just to order the same meal! Meal sizes are... More

We just stopped by on a random chance meal at 10 pm and loved it. I wholeheartedly recommend it. We ordered the wagu beef cutlet and the wagu beef and porcini pasta. Both were exquisite. We would definitely come here again!

We chose this place because the menu was interesting and the prices seemed affordable as well, ranging from about 700 Yen up for a main dish. But if this place is NOT something, then affordable! 1. The main dish may have been quite inexpensive, but beware, there is no side dish included. So it's just a tiny portion of whatever... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighborhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
