It's not been a good couple of days. We left the UK 2 days ago but our luggage failed to come along with us. We've had little sleep and no fresh clothes in that time. This morning I realised I'd lost my handbag (thankfully it was found and I could collect it) but that meant I also lost my appetite.... More

Great dinner. The pickles that came along with the main dishes are good as well. They do have English menu and the is visited by both tourists and locals.

We wanted to have great tonkatsu in Kyoto for dinner and saw great reviews for Katsukura. It was challenging just getting to the restaurant located in a high floor of the train station, but worth the effort. There was a 30 minute wait, but the wait help took our order and put it in queue, so service was quick when... More

We got off our train in Kyoto station and took our hungry family right to Katsukura based on the teipadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. There was a short 15 minute line at 7pm and we were given an English menu to review while we waited. Our order was taken while we were in line and we sat at... More

Katsukura is a more up market family style restaurant specializing in Pork Katsu with few other options available. We went twice during our recent visit to Kyoto. Our teen kids loved it. The staff are helpful and charming. Grinding your own sesame seeds as part of the mixing of your selected sauce style is a highlight with such a delicious... More

The pork tonkatsu cutlet was soooo good. It's very crispy without being dry or oily. And the pork cutlet inside remained juicy and tender. Miso soup and barley rice, both refillable - completed the wonderful meal. Just biting into the crisp cutlet was such satisfaction! Order the 160 g tenderloin if you are hungry. Although I didn't order the fried... More

This was my first experience having Tonkatsu, but I find it hard to imagine a better breaded pork tenderloin. The sauce was great (I added some spicy mustard in the small container to the "spicy" sauce since it wasn't very spicy), the dressing for the cabbage was just enough flavor for it with hints of honey and lemon, and the... This place knows how to make Tonkatsu. The outside was perfectly crispy, and the inside was so juicy and tender. I wasn't crazy about the sauce for the cabbage. This is the only thing keeping me from giving it five stars. The service was very good, and there's no issues with only speaking English. Do expect a wait; just sit... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
