We liked dinner so much that we came back the next day to eat brunch. Everything is fresh and organic. The husband is the waiter and helps cook. He talked us through the menu and is fun to chat with when he's not too busy....The wife is the chef and her cooking style is original, fresh and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed the food.More

Amazing, cute and delicious little restaurant. The menu was wide and I wanted to try everything. Staff talked me through the menu in English and I went for the bit of everything meal and it was delicious - some of the best food I’ve eaten...in Japan in terms of healthy and interesting. Great place for group of you have some vegan / vegetarian and some not as there is lots of fish on the menu but lots of vegan too. I will go back every time I’m in Kyoto. Sublime food!More

We walked a good distance to get to this place having read the the rave reviews on here. We were NOT disappointed, this was one of, if not the best food we had during our 16 day trip, the Italian owner/waiter was courteous, knowledgeable and...described all the dishes very well, the food was really tasty. His Japanese wife prepared the dishes beautifully. Excellent wine selection and the beer good too. Cosy and intimate, this place is worth the trek whilst in Kyoto...probably best to book in high season. You won’t be disappointed.More

Pettirosso has an extensive vegetarian menu with good vegan options as well. The food is amazing and the service is great too. Our waiter was very friendly, he explained all the meals and wine options for us. I had the soup and homemade bread. The...bread was warm and just out of the oven. The soup was some of the best I've ever had. We also shared gyoza, tempura vegetables, fish, and pasta. They have delicious homemade soda as well.More

This is such a nice little restaurant with many vegan and vegetarian meals available. The owner is a great host and so welcoming. He recommended a dish to me which is exactly what I wanted - a big bowl of vegan ragu pasta. It was...delicious! (and a nice break from noodles!) We also tried 2 of the vegan sides which were devine! I highly recommend. Thank you for a wonderful meal!More

In an inside lane of the busy shopping district of Kyoto, it is in a small house where google maps almost gives up. We went on a cold day and found it had 3 tables below and also upstairs. The service is by a team...of an Italian husband and Japanese wife and thus the food is fused italian and Japanese. They are really happy to make and serve the food. It’s a vegan restaurant in the main and has some fish on the menu.We tried the vegan potage which was a nice turnip soup. The fusilli pasta with mushroom pesto and small tomatoes was a delight. The grilled vegetables with yuzu and miso had 10 different local vegetables and was nicely done.the vegan aged ashi tofu with radish was a nice venture as normally Daishi has fish pasteA really delightful enterprise, personalised service, delicious food and reasonable price. A vegetarians delight.More

Pettirosso bills itself as a modern Izakaya restaurant and wine bar. We found it to be a nice, casual place with wine and generally Italian / Mediterranean food restaurant with good options for vegetarians and gluten-free folks. And there are many organic options as well....We were seated immediately at a table downstairs with a nice view of the small kitchen and the food being prepared in it. When other diners came in they were immediately sent upstairs to eat. I’m not sure if tourists like us don’t get to go upstairs, or if we had the better end of the deal, but either way, our experience was good. We ordered the dinner set which limits your entree choice to just a few choices which was a little disappointing as the entree I wanted was not included intros choices. I had the Biodynamic Italian Red wine which was well matched to the meal. The dinner set started with a pumpkin carrot soup. It was served cold with fresh broccoli and mushrooms. It was vegan and quite tasty and refreshing. Then a wooden plate came out with four vegan tapas, salad, and homemade bread. All the tapas were a Japanese/Mediterranean fusion and they included a delicious humus, pickled “things,” and a tofu omelet which was the best Japanese omelet I had while in the country. The greens and taro root were delicious and had a nice texture to them. The board came with a big salad which was very fresh and included a citrus dressing, topped with cracked pepper. This was also delicious. The homemade bread (not gluten-free) was out of control good. I had selected the Zucchini main. It’s a small portion of 2 pieces, topped with a smokey cheese. I’m generally not a zucchini guy (again I would have picked a different entree that wasn’t available with this dinner set, but this was delicious. No regrets! We enjoyed watching the chef cook and the atmosphere, in general, was good with cool music playing. If you’re in Kyoto and looking for thoughtfully prepared food, an alternative to straight-up Japanese cuisine, and good vegetarian options, head here!More

Dined there for the first time with my vegetarian family. The first thing that struck me was the warm, friendly and casual Italian welcome we received. Great explanations of the food options including catering to our food peculiarities. We were the only group upstairs so...we got a little bicycle horn to call for service. A great goofy touch which sets it aside from the typical Kyoto dining experience and reminds me why my other favorite travel destination is Italy. Food was delicious. My favorite was a hummus that was a side on my meal set, though my wife's grilled vegetable salad was something we all kept trying to steal pieces from. Talked food and travel with the folks who run the restaurant and they have that perfect marriage of Italian and Kyoto food philosophy of using a few excellent real ingredients in each dish and not ruining them by over-processing.More

We are in the middle of an extended trip to Japan, we are in Kyoto, very meat oriented. I wanted to treat my vegetarian wife to a non meat restaurant as she continuously suffers through my attempts to balance restaurant choices. This is certainly a...vegetarian restaurant and as it happens we ate vegan all evening. It is small, very small 3 tables up stairs (one on tatami) and one downstairs. The owners - Italian Mark, front of house and his Japanese wife, cooking - made you most welcome. We did have one minor glitch, we were running 10 minutes late and almost lost our table, don't be late. One is encouraged to take the set menu, we did. I had Vegan Lasagne though a small portion, excellent. My wife had Agedashi Tofu, a favourite of hers, she claims this was one of the best. As an appetiser there is a form of mezze plate, but for yourself, not for sharing, with a generous salad and 4 small side dishes. The dishes are all small, but the meal while not filling is very satisfying, which is best. The wine, only one red, was fabulous and VERY inexpensive, served in 500ml carafes. Everything about this meal, Mark & his wife, the location, down a very narrow lane, very Gion like and of course the food and wine was superb.More
