This place is located near nishiki market in a hidden little street. We had a sushi+sashimi set for 2500 yen which was Kacie one person, and a sushi set for 1800. Quality was good, especially the red snapper. I really enjoyed the gari as well. The restaurant is bar style with some tables with sorting mattresses in the first floor.... More

We stumbled upon this place by accident but ended up loving it. We sat at the bar and watched the chef in action, and also ended up chatting with some friendly people who were obviously regulars. Great sushi and a fun experience. Also reasonably priced. The eel was very tasty.

Old fish, inexpertly cut and tasted bad. Really poor. Felt sick after. Also the chefs sent us upstairs to the gritty dining area when there was clearly space at downstairs bar. Didn't get the feeling they wanted forefinger clientele that much. Positives. It's pretty cheap and the waitress was absolutely lovely. Anyway, don't go.

Ok little place making average sushi. We ordered a fairly inexpensive sushi set to get a taste of a few things and size up other items to add though we weren't persuaded to try anything else by what we tried. Average quality fish fairly poorly prepared in fairly stingy portions. The chef showed little care in his craft as we... More

A small restaurant located in Nishiki Market, north of Shijo Dori. A perfect sushi is offered there. Restaurant has two storeys, try to get a seat at the bar on the ground level. It is more comfortable and you can see the chef preparing sushi – it is really amazing. Sushi is served on the marble bar directly, you take... More

Tomisushi is tucked away in a winding maze of streets off the main shopping area. This is a tiny little place filled with locals. The 3 of us tucked in at the bar and were entertained by the sushi chefs who created us a series of delicious nigiri-- fresh as can be! The miso is delicious but scalding hot (our... More

Sitting around the counter we had a very nice dinner and met friendly Japanese. Our chef was chatty with regulars and foreigners. We ended up ordering what we saw on other people plates and their recommendations. Don’t be intimidated by the back street location: it’s actually really easy to find this gem!

Awesome sushi, fun local place. It seemed that all the customers were regulars in this tiny neighborhood place, but we felt welcomed and enjoyed our great sushi. English menu makes ordering easy. Not expensive.

this little restaurant hidden in the backstreets near a large covered mall in Kyoto is a gem. they do have an english menu, although it is clearly a place that is unused to foreign tourists. We were still welcomed with the customary japanese politeness and warmth. everyone sits around a bar within which the sushi chefs work their audience, and... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
