This is not your traditional Kyoto Kaiseki. It's a modern version but very good. There are no choices to make with this multicourse meal. They design the menu based on what looks good that day. The food was excellent. I recommend when you make your reservation you ask for a counter seat. You can watch as the Chefs prepare your... More

Firstly, thought the 3,500yen tasting menu was excellent value. An interesting take on kaisekei. That was probably the best bit. There was zero interaction with the chefs, and the english speaking waiter only spoke to us when we walked in, and walked out. We were never informed of any menu offerings/progression, or asked if we had any dietary requirements, sort... More

I did read a good review on NY Times but didn't really know what to expect. As I only speak a few words in Japanese I was worried about the language barrier but the super professional and friendly waiter spoke English and explained everything perfectly. The chef and his sous-chefs, together with what seemed like local regular guests created wonderful... More

We had an excellent dining experience at Giro Giro! Although reservations are strongly suggested, we were lucky to walk in and find two places at the balcony where we could watch the young staff prepare creative and delicious food. Fun dining experience and not expensive for the opportunity to experience a contemporary version of traditional kaiseki.

We were seated at bar counter where the chefs prepared the food. Great experience, from the creative food to the attentive and fun chefs. A japanese guy beside me kept on ordering sake for the chefs which seemed to me like a gesture of thanks for the wonderful dishes. It made the chefs more relaxed and engaging to the diners.... More

This place is a great option if dining in Kyoto. It is like many of the restaurants in Kyoto, hard to find. It is worth the trouble to find it. It is a great alternative to traditional kaiseki. The dishes are creative, great flavors and still maintains the tradition of seasonal courses. The atmosphere is lively, youthful, exciting. Not to... More

One of the most mind blowing food experiences I've ever had. I'm not a foodie and I'm not a food snob. So perhaps I don't have credibility. But I've never eaten so many of the amazing tastes and types of food that I had here. Prepared in the most artistic and creative way I've ever seen. It's also a truly... More

If you base things on how popular places are, then this is a great starter. We turned up to an answer of 10.30pm and had to book two days in advance to get a 6.30pm slot. We were glad that we came back as the 8 course set menu for around 3,800 yen was excellent value. Being at the bar... More

For records sake, this place is called GIRO GIRO and NOT Guilo Guilo. We saw this place while walking along the row of restaurants and it was really busy eventhough it was just after 5pm. After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor we decided to try it out. We lucked out and managed to get a reservation for 2 at 8.30pm... More

This place isn't somewhere to eat if you want a friendly welcome or great service. It's not nearly as good as it thinks it is. Needs to try a lot harder to give a good experience to customers.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
