My husband and I ate here 3 years ago in May of 2017. We were just reminiscing about how amazing it was, so I felt compelled to write a review. One of our favorite spots in the two weeks we spent in Japan, and we...visited a good number of highly regarded restaurants. Intimate, delicious, authentic. I hope to visit again one day.More

This was a very fun experience. There is a set menu with a number of courses. So there is no selection involved. All of the food is delicious. Mostly vegetable and seafood. Very little meat. We've been to the sister restaurant in Honolulu many times...and love that as well. Highly recommended. The restaurant is very small and I would strongly suggest reservations. Very reasonably priced!More

I can’t imagine how this place does not get all 5 star reviews. First you have to know you are going to a kaiseki, you don’t choose you are given a series of small dishes that are prepared by the chef for that day. You...have to pay cash (which is common in Japan). Now that you know that and still want to go be prepared for an amazing meal. Every course was fantastic, both delicious and the presentation was amazing. Chef explained every dish (in broken English but that is ok). Service was well timed. We were not rushed but we didn’t wait. Even though each course is small we were full when we left. If you like this kind of food and presentation I would definitely recommend going . It was all locals the night we went. Ask to sit at the counter on the first floor to get the total experience. Totally totally amazing.More

Blown away by this amazing find! We were walking along one of the laneways of beautiful Kyoto and came across this hidden gem. Very reasonably priced at 4000 yen for 8 beautiful dishes that were not only delicious and full of flavour but also so...beautifully presented. We were lucky enough to get a table as the restaurant was full. I would recommend to book and get a table at the bar so you can see the chefs in action. We were seated at a table upstairs which was still great!More

we sat at the counter and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, ambiance and watching the kitchen staff and fellow customers. The food was not always to be my taste but really interesting flavours and presentation and one not to be missed. Reasonably priced for where...we were.More

Have been every time I go to Kyoto, and it's always different, but wonderful. Took my sons too, and it was a highlight of their trip to Japan.

Workspace is oily with little space for staff to move around. Air suction isn’t powerful enough to suck up the odour and fumes from grill section of the kitchen meaning our jacket that was hanged by the wall all stank. Diners are all cramped together...too closely such that it became uncomfortable to eat without rubbing or bumping into the person next to you. To make it worse the person next to me kept leaning over and hitting me. Food wise, plenty of varieties with small plates and plenty of ingredients used, but mostly bland. I think the idea was there before but had been overdone/overthought. For example we were served sashimi that was all chopped into too many small pieces. No that is not how you innovate. Some things are not meant to be! Chef prepared food with his bare hand, then answered the phone pressing the buttons to answer and then continued handling the food without washing hands.More

A thoroughly enjoyable experience! The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, it's not so spacious: I kept bumping elbows with the guy beside me (when seated at the counter/bar) but I was there for the food! Little dishes of interesting and tasty food were...rolled out by an efficient assembly line of 3 cooks when I went (early December, 2019). I was told the main ingredients of each dish (in English) and really enjoyed it! Sorry, I didn't count how many dishes there were but it was around 8-10, including a dessert. Most of the diners were foreigners (so what?) and I think everyone enjoyed it. There's no menu (of course!), and it seems there is a 5:30 and 8:00 sitting. It is probably a good idea to make a reservation. Bit hard to find, but just ask people when you are in the vicinity.More

This restaurant is perfect if you want to experience kaiseki (japanese haute cuisine) in a totally relaxed, joung and edgy environment. The food is amazing, the staff and the cooks are friendly, inviting and entertaining. I can recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting kyoto. Tipp:...Reserve in advance!More

Family of four (adult children) visited for dinner having booked the previous night. We were seated upstairs which was busy but not rammed. The deal is an eight course taster meal for about £32. There is no choice or menu. We also had a couple...of bottles of very drinkable Sauvignon Blanc at about £30 each. Cheapest wine was around £25 per bottle. As a family we consider ourselves foodies and think we recognise decent food when we come across it. The first course was a bit bland and the first 3 courses came far too quickly. We were talking about that. Perhaps the chap overhead us or maybe it was planned, but after the 3 courses the food came at much better intervals. it was about 1hr 45mins from arriving to finishing. The courses themselves we interesting. Some quite traditional some a modern twist. We received an explanation of each course. The chap serving us spoke decent English. After 8 courses we were replete. Not over stuffed but satisfied. Very different from any other food we’d had in Japan. The total bill (with tax) came to around £200. We left happy. If you like taster menus this will suit you well.More

Much hyped, much loved by tourists restaurant near Gion, which we booked well before heading to Japan 🇯🇵. We had counter seats, which are probably best unless you’re in a group. We had a great view of the kitchen and a partial view of cherry...blossom 🌸 & and the river out back. It’s wasn’t the easiest place to find, so settling in with a cold glass of something felt great. Then the food began to arrive. As has been said elsewhere, it’s not kaiseki cuisine, but a kind of Japanese tapas or tasting menu (no choices). Unfortunately not a single dish was outstanding, or excellent or even very good. The best, possibly, a lightly seared not quite sashimi tuna. The highlight? Undoubtedly the Cotes du Rhône (pictured) - wow! The rest? Beige, bland, boring. Shame.More

We have had dinner, with a fixed menu based on several dishes with different flavors going from a tempura of red onions to chicken teriyaki, from a mix of tiny appetizers to fish soup, to finish with a sherbet. All dishes extremely well prepared and...served. You should book, as places are limited.More

Booked a table rather than counter seating as wanted to chat. Upstairs seating. Only offered set menu but as we’d booked from hotel with dietary requests, vegan and one dairy free, they worked round this for 2 of the four of us. Approx 7 dishes....Beautifully prepared and presented. Explained by waiter with excellent English. ( raised in Australia). Moderate price. 4 of us with drinks approx £35 per person. Easily could spend this on a meal in the Uk but no where near as good. Recommended for sure.More

We were recommended this restaurant and were severely disappointed. The dishes were all like underwhelming appetizers. There was no meat or substantial seafood dish. All very cheap ingredients with tiny portions. Ambiance was terrible - there was no menu and the staff didn’t even explain...what the dish was. Don’t waste your time or money here.More
