I am a Canadian man of Romanian heritage and live in Canada for the past 33 years. I am very adventurous, a real “foodie” and a globetrotter.
I visit Cluj, my hometown 2-3 times every year .One of my favorite restaurants is definitely “MIKO”.
It...is located on a side street, quite secluded and yet very close to downtown, away from the big noise, traffic, etc. The restaurant has its own parking lot if small; it also has an open deck and a covered one for warm but rainy days.
The main dining lounge is quite large and very bright. In addition to the usual tables there are a few communal tables for larger parties or “strangers” who decide to dine together. It is very cozy and friendly and there is always a background, very nice easy listening music.
The menu is Hungarian and Central European and there are countless choices of appetizers, salads, soups, steaks and other meat dishes, fish, etc. Some of the dishes are French and I must honestly confess that I had those dishes in France and in the best French Restaurants in Montreal , Toronto, New York ( I am proud to call International celebrity-chef Daniel Boulud my friend ) and yet at least one at “MIKO” was – by far the best one !!! Now figure that out !
There is also a quite impressive dessert menu .The list of beverages is not very long , however it is OK and could easily and appropriately pair any meal.
The food is absolutely more than delicious and the presentation is eye popping. The portions are very large; you see, Hungarians Romanians and Serbs have great appetite and love their food.
The meals are wonderful, glorious, exquisite, sublime, mouth watering, fabulous , stellar!
Considering the above it is a pleasant surprise that this is a rather inexpensive- moderate priced restaurant.
The service is very prompt and extremely friendly .Most of the servers are very young ; they are closely watched by the managers and very , gently advised as necessary. The managers, Zsolt and Judit( both above and beyond outstanding chefs ) treat their staff with utmost respect something not very common anymore... For the very young they act (almost) like parents and we all were very touched.
Zsolt and Judit are very kind and considerate and it is more than obvious that they truly care a great deal about their guests; they will bend over backwards to ensure that everybody is having a great time. They visit the tables and spend time with the guests enquiring about what else should possibly be improved.
Nobody is ever rushed and have plenty of time to chat and eat the delicious meal.
I have been to “MIKO” many times with party of 3-4-5. Each time everyone had a great time. During my visits to Cluj, however short and however busy I may be, I visit at least once if not twice “MIKO” restaurant. For me and my close friends visiting “MIKO” is a must and a tradition.
Best time to visit is around 12:30-1:00 p.m. when it is very quiet .Should you prefer dinner- it would be a good idea to make a reservation and avoid waiting time- especially in the week-end.
I would highly recommend this great restaurant to visitors looking for a great (and inexpensive) meal.
Folks – go for it and I am ready to bet my last buck that you will be happy with your choice.More
