I worked with Leonel to create a custom menu for my birthday. He made the process very easy through email and an online party planning forum where I could see the contract, menu, and our communications. Alejandro, the bartender was very pleasant as well. He...greeted all my friends and was very personable. I had been to the restaurant several times with my husband for dinner decided to have a celebration with my friends there. My 15 girlfriends and I were all very happy with the food, drinks, and service. I highly recommend the passion fruit margaritas and the stuffed sweet plantain with garlic shrimp. Those 2 things are a must every time I go! I would definitely have a gathering there again!More

This is a neighborhood gem with a smart decor, warm and welcoming staff and delicious food. We enjoyed a leisurely brunch. The dishes were fresh tasting and well seasoned. The tres leches cake is superb.

I recently had my bridal shower here and I have to say the party turned out great from the service to the food. I did a lot of research to find a restaurant in the neighborhood (Astoria) to host my bridal shower. I was looking...for a brunch/lunch with unlimited drinks of some sort for about 35 people for a 3 hour party. Of all the places I contacted, Maizal had the most variety of dishes offering about 10 entrees (with different variations within each) and the best prices. The options for gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan was plentiful. Also, the prices were about $5-$8 per-person lower than other places I had contacted for a similar type of menu. For the initial booking and planning most of the communication was done via e-mail with one of the Managers, Leo. He was very responsive via e-mail and answered any questions we had. I put down a deposit in person, and at the same time Leo showed me around the restaurant / party area. It terms of the actual party—everything went really incredibly smooth. One of the head servers introduced herself to me in the beginning and continued to communicate with me about timing of things throughout the party (i.e. when to start the 2hr unlimited drinks as some people were coming in late, when to cut the cake etc.) All of the other servers working the party (I believe there were about 3 or 4) were very helpful and attentive. As for the food and drinks—I only received positive feedback on the food. Like I said previously there were so many options to pick from. Also, they kept the drinks flowing for the full 2 hours. The servers came around with pitchers of margaritas, sangria, etc and were consistently refilling glasses, there was never an empty glass on the table! The only con I would call out is that the party area (although mostly private) is in a an open area so there is some noise from the restaurant. This only became an issue when we were trying to do one of those Bridal Shower “he said/she said” games and it was really hard to hear the people talking. However, I had known there would be other tables around and it really only became an issue when we were trying to have everyone at our party hear us. Overall I would definitely recommend Maizal for a Bridal Shower, Baby shower, milestone birthday party etc. We had a party of 35, and I know the are able to accommodate less/more than that. Thank you again to Leo and the Team at Maizal for helping me have such a memorable party 😊More

Atmosphere is great! Nice party room. Funny in a Mexican restaurant to be listening to Salsa, but ok. The prices were -- whooa nelly -- and portions small. After a basket of stale chips and salsa with no flavor, I decided to experiment with chorizo...and potato empanadas. A tiny pair arrived, and had no crunch and flavor that I look for in snacks to accompany drinks. My companion got the tortilla soup -- a better place for stale chips, but we were uninspired to order the pricy entrees. Well, we needn't have worried as this "bar" closed at 10pm and we were booted out. No need to worry -- we repaired to the Mexican deli across the street for sweet bread and headed home. The sad thing is that when I entered, I mentioned that I wanted to hold a party there for my daughter, and after some mumbled excuses about the owner not being there nothing came of the conversation. Speaking of conversation, the waiters often seemed involved in their own and my companion and I ended ours early when the place closed. If they are trying to make a go of it by shrinking portions and raising prices, shouldn't they want party business? Sad, because now I'm going elsewhere.More

We held our regular AstoriaCentric dinner at Maizal yesterday. What a really nice comfy restaurant this Tequila bar is compared to many others in the neighborhood. I ordered a freshly cooked shredded beef burrito and had an egg plant dish which we all shared. Everyone...had a great time as we always do, And yes there were quite a few tequila options to go around. And well worth a repeat visit in the near future!More

We chose to celebrate my daughter’s birthday at Maizal Restaurant, and was incredibly disappointed. Our first time here, we were escorted to the back and given two menus - one for happy hour/specials and another, standard menu. We had hoped to order from the happy...hour menu but were told from the waitress that it was only for those guests seated in the front of the restaurant. So, we asked to move, but were told the front was full and we could not. We opted to order a guacamole appetizer which we received without plates or the jalapeño on the side, as requested. We waited nearly 10 minutes for our waitress to come to check on us so that we could request the plates, the forgotten jalapeño, and a second round of water - as we had never gotten a refill since we entered the restaurant. After another 5 minutes passed we could not wait any longer and had to go to the bartender just to get plates and our jalapeño. We never got a refill on water and were never checked up on. At this point we decided to just get the check and leave; only to find an 18% tip already included on the bill. Absolutely horrible birthday experience; we will not ever be returning.More

We are sorry you had a negative experience at Maizal. The bar-bites menu is offered at the "bar only". When the waitress offered you a seat at front while there was still time to give you a table, your group refused. Later you changed your...More

I was reluctant to go in to this place because of the price of the tacos but hunger and simple attractive interior finally prevailed. I will not go again for following reasons: 1. Place was completely empty yet we had to look for our waiter...to the point where the bartender had to walk to our table and serve us. 2. Bland food - I ordered spicy pork quesadilla, which had no spice and no taste 3. 20 dollar fish tacos (2pcs) were made with not exactly the freshest fish AvoidMore

The $20 dollars you mention are $18 just to keep it honest. They are two pieces of fresh cod fish served with a full salad and rice and beans. They happen to be the most ordered item in our menu.

After craving mexican the day after cinco de mayo we found this place online and headed here for brunch on a Sunday. We made a reservation in case they were busy but we went a bit later around 2:30 and there was only 3 of...us and we didn’t totally need one as there were a few empty tables but I think during a busier time a reservation would be smart. Everything from food to service was great. We got the bottomless drink package which gives you an hour and a half of unlimited drinks. We all got margaritas which were amazing and strong and delicious and we told them to keep the rounds coming and they did not disappoint. We started with the super nachos and guacamole. The guacamole was great and also comes with a side of red salsa and the nachos we had chosen came with pulled chicken and melted cheese, you can choose your choice of meat, they come with the sour cream and salsa and guacamole on the side which is nice so you can have each chip the way you want it. Next we got quesadillas, chicken flautas and huevos rancheros. The quesadillas will be the best you’ve ever had and the flautas and rancheros will satisfy any cravings you had before. The huevos come with a choice of rice and beans or potatoes and the flautas and quesadillas also come with the sides of guacamole, sour cream and salsa verde. Also the sour cream seems home made its creamier and thicker than any sour cream you’ve ever had and is super luscious. Highly recommend 10/10.More

My daughter recently moved to Astoria (a great place for restaurants) and Maizal did not disappoint. Off the main street, this intimate restaurant has a menu just big enough to satisfy everyone's tastes, and authentic to boot. The atmosphere was very pretty with a nonworking...fireplace charmingly decorated. Many appetizers to choose from, and the fresh guac and queso (with chorizo) were both excellent with generous portions ($9 & $14 respectively). For my main I had the shrimp enchiladas mole, and it was among the best mole I've had. My husband enjoyed his green enchiladas with pork and the paella was good too. I had written on the Opentable reservation that it was my daughter's birthday, and the server very charmingly asked if we'd like one of their desserts with "happy birthday" written on the plate. I choose the Tres Leches cake, a favorite, and it was delicious. Prices were reasonable for food of this quality. We will definitely be back. Reservations suggested, although the early hours are not that busy. It fills up around 7 pm.More
