Don't be deceived by the old setup, unassuming old couple owner serves up superbly fresh sashimi. English menu are available upon request, and the service are friendly

Read about this place and was pretty undecided based on recent reviews. It’s in a small pedestrian street directly across the road from Kintetsu Nara station. Nara is not on the coast so wondered about the freshness of the tuna. As others have written...the place...looks pretty unimpressive from the outside and when you enter the place looks like it could do with a damn good clean (it’s been here for 42 years) However if you can look past that...the owners speak really good English...the seared tuna lunch was tasty (fish comes from Osaka market) and the price is reasonable. Would have given 3.5 if that equaled Good on the TripAdvisor scale.More

Veered in on a cold winter day and ordered maguro sashimi with rice & miso (Y2500). I was the only customer, and they (the nice old couple running the shop) sat me at the counter. It was surreal - after the slices were made and...food delivered, they sat in the corner and watched - I felt as if I was performing. Accompanied by the talk show blaring on the radio. The sashimi truly was very good, melting in the mouth. I'd say, it was in a league of its own. I liked the place, small, simple and with attention to quality.More

This place is filthy and it stinks. This does not necessarily say anything about the food quality and even in a place like this one might find some good tuna. Be assured: you won't find it here. You cannot say anything against defrosted fish -...if it is done properly. In this restaurant I got a tuna sashimi which was way too cold in the beginning and after a while unappetizing juice oozed out. I do not understand why a lot of customers (obviously a lot of young travelers) seem to be so euphoric about this place. Sure, the staff is really friendly. But saying that they serve the best tuna in the world proves just one thing: that you never have eaten any really good tuna in your life before.More

Delicious meal with great classic Japanese restaurant in Nara. I ordered the ToRo-Maguro don with fried Maguro. All dishes are made with high quality fish and very fresh as well. Highly Recommended!

If you like Tuna, do not miss coming here on your day trip to Nara! I wanted to have something a bit different, so I went with the seared tuna over rice. It was good, but the sauce was a bit too sour for what...I was looking for. It's not bad by any stretch, the tuna is so fresh and delicious, but just wasn't something that satisfied my palette at the time. My partner got the tuna sashimi over rice with wasabi and I MUCH preferred his. Beautiful pieces of tuna slices, not shy on the amount at all. I'm practically drooling as I write this. They also have high quality fatty tuna sashimi. They also have an English menu. Tuna and sashimi lovers, go go go!More

The owners are charming, it's true. The food is not bad and it's tasty, that's true too. Despite all this, I would not lie if I said that the hygiene of this restaurant is unacceptable. Me and my friend were lucky to not be sick...after this dinner. I really think that the quality of a restaurant is also reflected in its cleanliness. So please dears owner, clean up your restaurant!More

Came here based on the reviews after a morning hanging with the deer. The Toro at this restaurant was the best tuna I’ve ever eaten. Completely melt in your mouth. The tataki was fire grilled. The owners are a husband and wife and have ran...the place for 42 years. The boss man literally flips the tuna on the grill bare handed. I don’t know how he does it! The tataki was so good that we placed a second order. Will definitely return if we ever visit Nara again. An entire meal for 2 for $50. Extremely affordable.More

The place is run by two hard working elderly people who both speak English. The food was extremely good and humble just like the restaurant it’s served in.

Sorry for the late reply. The place is really small and turnover reasonably fast. So, walk-in would actually be ok.
