I love the atmosfere here. The interior so classic japanese, feel homey. When you enter the restorant you need to open your shoes and change with japanese slippers. Then you will be escort to your place which we have on tatami floor. The food taste...so nice. So far this is the most delicious eel i ate than other places in japan( i only visit tokyo, kyoto, osaka).More

We waited around 15 minutes in line. We took different set menus n all of them were good. The eel is excellent.

The waitress was extremely rude. She didn't welcome us, and when she brought the food, she set it to one side of the table so that we had to place it in front of us ourselves. I complained to the owner (I speak Japanese) and...she was apologetic, but the damage was done. The food was mediocre and overpriced.More

My wife wanted to eat at this old famous eel place. The eels where apparently good, but the other food is average. Long waiting times can be expected

The first time my wife and I came to this place was in 2006. It was popular back then but we only had to wait for 15 minutes to get a table. Nowadays, it flooded with mainland Chinese tourists. We already got there early (that...was before 6pm) but we had to wait over 2 and a half hours for a table. By the time we sat down it was about 8:30pm. we waited for so... long that we were from feeling hungry to losing our appetite. Too bad (for us). The waiter kept apologising to us but... actually it’s really no one’s fault. My only complaint was that the waiter could have told us we had to wait for at least 120 minutes instead of kept telling ‘soon’. Anyway, the eel dinner set was good although we were in no mood to fully enjoy the food.More

Satisfying unagi meal, many different types of set meals to choose from. Go after peak meal hours for shorter or no waiting line. They have kids meal as well with no unagi/eel as the fish has small bones. Attentive service.

For such a highly raved restaurant, I found it priced slightly on the higher end. Atmosphere was nice, staff were helpful and friendly. Food... I given the pumped rating on trip advisor I think it was ok, but nothing to complain about. The walk here...from Nara was long and I would have expected better. Eel was definitely fresh, could taste the difference, but priced so as well. The quantity of eel per serving wasn't that great value. Overall I guess it was good, but for all the raving recommendations from lonely planet, various blogs and tripadvisor etc..... nah... wouldn't go back there again.More

First thing first - food was good as confirmed by many of the reviewers before me. I especially enjoyed the 3000+ yen unagi don which allows you to try out unagi chazuke. Although not explicitly stated, you may also add on a chawanmushi and salad...to this don, to make it a set. Service was also good. As others have also mentioned, the queue is exceedingly long during lunch time. We had great anticipation for the food after the long wait and the food met our standards. I would have easily given this restaurant about 4-5 stars if not for an incident towards the end that completely ruined the experience for me. After I finished my food, I wanted to use the washroom. From my seat, I saw a male washroom sign located outdoors of the restaurant so like most human beings would (or maybe I'm just a presumptuous pleb), I assumed that is the washroom. BIG MISTAKE. Yes that it is a washroom alright, but not one that the public can use apparently? When a waitress bumped into me in the corridor, heading from the direction of that particular washroom, she glared at me and shouted "NO NO NO" without any explanations of some sorts. Then she slammed the door that separates the washroom to the eating area. (Why open the door to begin with if the public is not allowed to enter? Why aren't there signs that say 'use another washroom' instead?) Well honestly, I admit it is my mistake if I accidentally trespassed that sacred toilet but I do think it is exceedingly rude of that waitress to shout at me and then, slam a door on my face without explaining why I should not be using that toilet. Until now, I'm not even sure what is going on because there weren't any explanations given. If I did use the wrong washroom then I apologise. Nevertheless, that was an appalling experience (relative to not just Japanese service standards but also, in every other restaurant) given that I was not aware that there was another washroom. TLDR: Good food, especially the unagi chazuke. It is slightly on the pricier end but the ambience and food met the price point. However, I'm confused on how to rate the service. On one hand, most staff were polite and helpful except for that one bad experience. *Do note that there is one toilet by the entrance which I failed to notice* **Don't make the mistake as I did by entering the wrong washroom**More

Of course, no problem. The venue is quite big but make sure to place a reservation in advance, given the place is quite busy at all times.
