Really excellent, fresh conveyor by sushi for budget conscious travelers in Otaru. The restaurant is literally in one of the old canal warehouses and was super user friendly with loads of English available on menus and the staff all spoke quite a bit. I recommend the miso tempura ramen also. It was very savory. Price of a decent meal for two with about 6 plates of sushi, soup, sake and beer: 4000 yen

I gave it five stars not because the sushi is excellent. I considered it as a very cheap local sushi chain restaurant that provide good quality sushi. You will be surprised that you pay half price or less than you use to pay at your home town. The taxi driver told me this is the best sushi place for him. If you want to eat likes local people. This is the place. Sometime, I spend USD200-400 for a meal but I still enjoy eating in this casual local restaurant, around USD20. So, I trust me, it won't be bad. It's worth a visit when you want to have a casual sushi meal.

Staff were so friendly. Even the chef said “enjoy your meal”. At first, we couldn’t find the restaurant. Then realized much later that the entrance was above street level (steps) next to Laox. Parking available below building. Very convenient.

We were a little surprised with the prices of this kaitensushi place. We heard raving reviews about it. But I’ve been to other kaitensushi places in Tokyo and Kyoto which also had great quality fish but way lower prices. The beer was also pricier than we expected. And small. We ordered all of our sushi...don’t like to pull fish that’s been sitting on a belt for who knows how long. Pros: we came for a really early dinner hoping to beat the rush. Mission accomplished. We went on a Wednesday at 4pm. Only two other parties. There’s a machine that a lot of busy restaurants have that allows you to sign in for a table. If you do have to wait, there’s a cute souvenir shop right next door with lots of goodies. Ordering is easy here. They have picture menus in English and order forms with your table number on them. They offered all you can drink soft drinks. You help yourself and I think it was less than $4 which is rare to find in Japan. This restaurant is right next to the canal near one of the bridges. Close enough to the JR Otaru Station. We walked to and from. Cons: not that this is bad but we didn’t see the typical call button that most restaurants in Japan have. When more parties came in, we had a harder time getting the waitress over to our in new orders so we started giving them to the sushi chef. Again, we were surprised at the higher price of the sushi here. Maybe because it’s a tourist destination? It was good but we would probably try someplace else next time we are in Otaru.

Surprisingly, the few Sushi Train restaurants we have tried in Japan are quite average and no better than one finds in any large city around the world. This place is no different. The venue is nice and one of the larger of this type. The food is fine, though it gets busy and you will wait on the busier days. Convenient parking next door and only a couple of minutes off the main shopping/walking St on the canal side.

Sushi are of standard quality in Japan, not particularly amazing! Restaurant is very spacious! Location is right behind the canal which is a good stop by lunch or dinner if you want to catch up with the night light up view. There’s a parking right next to the restaurant (Spend 2000 Yen in the restaurant, a 1- hr free parking coupon will be offered)

Hardly finds an ordinary Sushi restaurant at home that strikes this fast food sushi. What strikes one first is the freshest products,As always, a conveyor belt sushi restaurant gives all tastes the chance to try out for a small amount of money. One or two small unorthodox creation also pass in review.

For those who visit the Otaru Canal in the evening, and want to grab some sushi before catching the train, than this is your place. They provide take-aways from their readily served sushi. It was really great and hassle free. And only just across the canal. The thing is, the taste was not all great. A few even tasted too plain for my liking. However service was great and efficient!

In 1982 the first KANTARO "函太郎" opened in Hakodate City alongside the Tsugaru Straits in Hokkaido. It is a quite well known Sushi chain restaurant. Kantaro Sushi is very casual, a fine place to sample excellent sushi in a laid-back environment. The restaurant is half kaiten (conveyer belt) and half regular order-from-the-menu in its set up, allowing guests the choice of whichever style they’d prefer. If you opt for the former, simply pick up whatever you like on the conveyer as it passes, if the latter, browse the extensive menu and let the staff know your choices. Very accommodating to tourists and friendly, Kantaro Sushi makes for a great place to grab a bite whatever the occasion. In addition to Sushi, deep fried and other foods are also available. Foods are fresh and delicious.
