Wow, totally unexpected find in the highlands of Takayama. A fantastic, warm and friendly small restaurant serving tasty Mexican food. Food was excellent, beer was cold, sake was body temperature, and the chef/owner was friendly and chatty. Highly recommend!!!

The owner spent some months in Mexico a couple of decades ago and fell in love with the food. It's a limited, classic range of options, but he has the right ingredients. Plus the decor is a wonderful union on Mexican colour and Japanese order. Brilliant restaurant.

Great food. We had the chicken quesadillas and beef tacos. Both delicious. Very friendly owners. Small restaurant so get there not long after it opens to get a table. Highly recommended!

We found out about this place in our travel guide. Hungry for something other than ramen we hunted and located this great mexican place. The chips and guac were a nice change and the Corona with a lime had me feeling like I was home. The owner/chef/waiter/one man show running the whole thing was very nice and we loved this... More

Was after a change from the Japanese cuisine as it was coming to the end of our trip. This Mexican restaurant was a nice surprise. We had the fried squid, tomato salad, Burritos, enchiladas, 2 coronas and was about $45 Australian dollars. The owner was warm and attentive and kept the tunes going. Nice atmosphere. No complaints.

Very very decent tempura squid with a cracking tomato salsa, a really really good tomato salad, two lovely beef burritos (with just a hint of miso) and two G&Ts and two Bloody Marys, served quickly and smoothly by a nice freindly couple in a buzzy, pleasant litle eaterie, all for just over £25? That'll do nicely! (will come back one... More

After a week in Japan, we wanted to try something different than Japanese cuisine. We were convinced by the many good reviews, and decided to try Chapala. We loved it: the atmosphere, the food, everything was great! The owner does everything: he cooks, serves, chooses the music (Mexican sounds). Everything we ate was great, but try the guacamole with freshly... More

The vegetarian burritos were great as was the chilli con carne. The food was fresh and tasty and the owner/chef made a good margarita as well. Highly recommended, particularly for people looking for something other than Hida beef.

Great fresh Mexican Food prepared by the Japanese owner who has traveled in Mexico and speaks Spanish, the Vege Burritos and Nachos are great and so are the Margheritas.

We decided on Chapala as we were a little tired of the repetitive cuisine of Takayama (hida beef served in all it's forms). Chapala is a little gem hidden away down some backstreets of the main Takayama food precinct. The restaurant was perhaps a little difficult to find as other reviews have mentioned - however we really didn't have that... More
