Really cosy place with friendly staff. Been here twice for dinner on our stay in Hoi An and we highly recomend it. As a vegetarian there was a lot of options and there was no problem switching the chicken for tofu in the dishes to make them vegetarian, which was really nice. If you’re staying at the Sun Paradise Villa you get 10% off your order which is a big plus (I can highly recomend that place as well!). We had some coffe for dessert and it was really good too, so if you go there for a coffe or for breakfast it’s will be really good too. Not the fastest at getting the food out, but the waitor had a big smile on and kindly excused it taking some time, and it was really no problem! Go there, you will be happy and full when you leave! :)

Smiles and Superb Food!!!

We stayed at Sunrise just across the road and first visited Mate on our second night. The food is all home cooked and delicious! The service to go with it is just so unbelievably friendly and lovely. They were so nice that we visited every morning for breakfast after that and always looked so happy to see us - the banana pancakes and coffee they offer is yummy!!! The owners always had smiles on their faces and were adorable, they were so nice and welcoming to us every time we came. The owner noticed I had a cough and made me a ginger, lemon and honey tea which was so nice of her to do, and again was delicious! Would definitely recommend coming here if you are staying in the area....just lovely!!!!

The fresh spring rolls were excellent. We enjoyed the chicken noodle dish and the sweet and sour chicken as our main course. They gave us a complimentary banana crepe for dessert - yummy. We would definitely recommend this restaurant - it’s a casual, family owned restaurant with fresh, homemade dishes and very friendly service. The family is so hospitable especially as we didn’t think about no credit cards. We didn’t have enough cash with us so we are going back today to pay the rest and have lunch. They were very understanding and were more concerned about how we were going to pay for our taxi back than whether we would come back to pay the balance of our bill.

Fantastic restaurant. Delicious food, great service and a welcoming atmosphere. Upcoming location so not an ideal location yet but right on the beach worth the travel if you aren't staying close by and a must if you are near. Fresh coconut, well blended smoothie, fresh and tasty seafood and great recommendations all at a very reasonable price. Really nice staff and great English speaking which is a bonus. Was a pleasure. Will be back for a coffee at the least!

A MUST visit while in Hoi An.

This is our second visit to Hoi An and without a doubt 'Key and Snow' - owners of Mate restaurant and Coffee have been by far the most hospitable and welcoming to their establishment. The quality, portion size and cleanliness exceeded all our expectations. Key also provided a wealth of knowledge of the area and told us an abundance of facts about Hoi An and Vietnam. This family run business is absolutely amazing and offers a variety of cuisines set in an open aired venue along side the main road so it is easy to locate. We would highly recommend Mate restaurant to any coffee or food lover who desires the real taste of Vietnam with the freshness and cleanliness of what is expected from an eatery and coffee house. If you are in Hoi An you have to check out this restaurant! It is a bit further out of the main hub of town, but a quick 5 mins on a push bike will reward you with the yummiest food from the sweetest couple. Very impressed with the service. They even gave us free banana pancakes for supporting them during their low season!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

LOVE this place! I’m staying at Sun Paradise Villa around the corner and was recommended by the owner of my hostel to eat dinner there after arriving late in the evening (and I got a 10% discount!). Ordered banh xeo, morning glory, and a Saigon beer, and it was EVERYTHING I wanted in that moment. Came back the next morning for a Vietnamese iced coconut coffee and holy cow, it was incredible. The staff are incredibly nice and very friendly. Honestly I think I’m going to have to stop by at least once per day while I’m in Hoi An.

Great food , Coffee and excellent value. I have seen this Unique Coffee Cáfe grow without sacrificing quality and value into the excellent Restaurant it is today. An extensive Menu for all tastes. The owners are wonderful and friendly, nothing is too much to ask of them. .

Good healthy food!

Three times we went to Mate. The first time we had the mackerel tomato dish and squid with passion fruit. Both very tasty, not spicy (I like it spicy, but the dish didn't needed it). The second time we where there just for coffee. The cappuccino came with some latte art and tasted good. The espresso was also nice, not sauer like other espresso. The third time was for a simple dinner, we had bahn xeo and beef pho (soup). All tasty and enjoyable. The soup may be served some richer, more veggies would be nice. In both dinner occasions we got some free fruit as a dessert, superb! This place is highly recommendable as also for the very good price /good food value and the nice and friendly service!

You will be treated like family!

We are so sad that we didn't discover the Mate until our last night in Hoi An. They are located right across the street from the Sunrise Resort, but had been closed a few days due to covid-19. We went over for dinner and found out we were only their second customers of the day. Their business is hurting, just like everyone else! But, they jumped up with smiles on their faces and cooked us the absolute BEST food we had in Hoi An!! We especially loved the egg pancakes ( a special dish in Hoi An)! We also had braised pork in a clay pot. The flavor was excellent! When our dinner was finished, we were treated to the most delicious banana pancake! The dear couple who own this restaurant are so sweet and friendly, they make you feel like you are part of their family! If you are staying at the Sunrise Resort...you will want to walk across the street!! Even if you are staying further away...make the effort and get there!!!

Friendly staff and amazing food

We came to this restaurant for our first meal in Hoi An because of the reviews and it didn't disappoint. The staff were so friendly and gave us extra rice for free for no reason other than we must've looked hungry. Had the Pork hotpot and pork with sesame as well as the local veggies (morning glory) and loved it all, it was so delicious. Atmosphere was great the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home. When it came time for the bill we had no cash so they let us come back and pay the bill the next day with no issues at all and even went as far as apologizing as if they had caused us an inconvenience!? Anyone coming to Hoi An must come to this place!

Wonderful meal and service

Key and Snow greeted us warmly, very chatty and friendly. We had the chicken noodles and sweet and sour pork. Delicious meal, perfect portion, wonderful flavors. Our meals were cooked fresh whilst we enjoyed the modern and cozy atmosphere of the restaurant. Cold beers were also enjoyed. We even got some complimentary fresh watermelon for dessert. Outstanding service and top quality food! Very close to the Fivitel Hotel where we stayed. Would highly recommend Mate to anyone visiting Hoi An. Thank you Key and Snow!

Gidday Mate! What a wonderful experience!

Mate Restaurant and Bar. Cua Dai. Hoi An. Only one sit-down customer in a month or so but the food and service was still first class! I read about this restaurant on google restaurant search and thought it sounded good. Sadly, covid has meant many cafes and restaurants are closed or suffering financially. But true to the Vietnamese culture and entrepreneurial spirit this Restaurant owners (Khanh) and his wife (Tuyet) and children have kept the business going throughout. Mainly takeaways and home deliveries. I rang ahead to be sure they were open. Yes, I will wait for you. On arrival I was greeted with a huge smile and offered a full menu. Despite my protests and wish to just eat whatever they had available and was not too much trouble they insisted. We have 3 chefs with nothing to do ... so all ok! I chose the sautéed chicken with sweet and sour, and some egg fried rice. Wow! the wife arrived on her motor scooter within minutes with a load of fresh ingredients. She prepared and cooked while I drank cold beer and talked with the owner Thang. The food was sensational! Easily the best sweet and sour chicken I have ever had. The egg fried rice was the perfect complement. You will always get the freshest ingredients in Vietnam. And the food is prepared with such care. It is a cultural thing. To my surprise a complimentary desert (banana and cinnamon crepes with chocolate sauce) was brought to my table when I had finished the main courses. It was delicious. Khanh explained that his mother taught him to make the crepes when younger and they used to sell them on the beach to tourists before covid. I had a wonderful lunch and really enjoyed the conversation. You would easily drive past this Restaurant as it is a bit baron and run down and lifeless now with no tourists. But I strongly recommend you visit here if you get the opportunity, and I am sure that Thang and family will make you feel as welcomed and satisfied as I was today! And the beach opposite is pretty good as well! I was the only person mad enough to be out in the mid-day sun but I loved it! The water was crystal clear and so cool. All the hotels along this Cua Dai strip of beach seem to be closed so as usual I was the only person on the beach! Lucky me! 😝 A simple life. To be enjoyed.

Delicious food in relaxed atmosphere

Mate Restaurant and Coffee is a very cozy place located next to the beach where you can get different kinds of delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether you like local vietnamese or chinese food (almond as well as pineapple passionfruit chicken recommended!) Khanh will cook for you from scratch with only fresh ingredients in an open kitchen. Furthermore his desserts are excellent. Try the banana pancake and you won’t be disappointed. He also offers a variety of cocktails - one of the best mojitos I‘ve ever had! Khanh, his wife and their two daughters are very lovely and open-minded people. We had great conversations with them and Khanh gave us recommendations what to do best in the city and for which price ;) We are happy to return to Mate Restaurant and Coffee when we‘ll be back in Hoi An!
