It’s hard to believe that XL Lounge and Bar is only a year old. Started by a couple of tall, strapping Dutch guys (hence the name) it has a Middle Eastern style, complete with shisha pipes and silky draped ceilings, and a friendly ambiance. Owner Herman often agrees to host a fundraiser for a good local cause, and generously changed XL’s back garden area to accommodate the crazy Friday Karaoke crowd, when their other spot closed down. Herman is one of the most welcoming people in Ubud, and of course this attitude rubs off on his staff, so they have a lot of repeat guests. I’m guessing they’ll also have many more birthdays.
