Not my first pick. I have traveled to Cuba and tasted Ropa Vieja a few times. Sorry this place missed the mark for me. Out last night in Columbia after two weeks of fantastic foods. Wanted to end with a memorable night out. This was...the most expensive by more than double and the least liked by all. The only reason for 3 vs 2 stars is the staff is friendly ans nice ambiance - although the street ambiance is even better. I found the octopus to be chewy, the ropa Vieja empanadas stringy and the ham chrome ta forgettable. The drinks were decent but not fantastic. The smoked one is cool. The tops Vieja itself was almost in edible. It tasted like it was stewed in fish soup. The more I eat the more I felt maybe it was just stale. The chicken was fair and the pork was dry. Worst part is they rushed the meal litterally bringing our main half way through eating the shared appetizer. The band was ok but nothing I would wait in line for and more of miles jazz and local music than Cuban music - on the Romantic side. Sorry this place just didn’t hit the mark.More

During our stay in Cartegena, we ate at this spot. I am a HUGE fan of Cuban black beans with white rice. Here, I ordered that plus platanos maduros. The beans y'all...I cannot rave enough about the beans. I wanted to sip the bean juice...left in my cup! I'm joking!...but, am I?😜 My husband says the fish was excellent as well. The atmosphere was great. I have two boys, 7 and 9. They enjoyed the music. I'd also like to note the location. This place is located across from the Santa Clara Hotel. The corner has a wonderful night life.More

Searching for good restaurants I bumped into this one on trip advisor. After reading good reviews I decided to go, and I am glad I did!! The establishment is cute, starting from the outside. Inside is even prettier. Service was prompted and with smile. Food...and drinks are really good, and absolutely worth going. If you are going with children go earlier on in the day as they play live music Thursday-Sunday. I would recommend this restaurant.More

Oh this is my kind of place. The atmosphere is so fun and authentic being in a wood and brick building. They had wonderful Cuban jazz playing, the beer was cold and yummy and the ceviche was perfect being light, tangy, fresh and delicious. This...is exactly what I wanted to find in Cartagena. Come here for great food, service and fun.More

This is a great addition to the Cartagena bar scene. I recommend going on a Saturday since they have a live show that starts around 8pm which is phenomenal. Last time I was there an extremely talented cuban singer performed. I would recommend making reservations...for around 7pm if you want to grab a good table to enjoy the show. The ambiance is great, the mojitos as well as the food are really good and very fairly priced for Cartagena. We had the croquetas, the grilled octopus and the pan con lechon and everything was fresh, and perfectly done. I can guarantee that you’ll have an amazing time at Cuba 1940.More

I very rarely write negative reviews as I don't like hurting a business, but I had to comment on this. First, a few positives. We went on a Friday night and was early enough that there weren't many people so the atmosphere was lovely. Inside...you are away from the pestering street vendors. The music was just the right volume. It wasn't so loud that you had to shout but enough that it set the mood. The lighting and ambiance is great. We ordered a couple of mojitos and they were delicious. We started with an appetizer, which was their most popular ceviche. It was presented nicely and I was excited to try it as I love ceviche....all types. The first bite I thought was strange, so I tried again. The third bite I had to spit out. I just couldn't eat it. My wife thought the same. She couldn't eat it either. I believe the fish was bad, old, or not fresh. I am not sure but it didn't smell right either. The waiter apologized and offered to bring us another or something different, but a chef/cook that would put that dish out, I question everything else. The waiter offered to give us a round of mojitos on the house, but at this point I wasn't in the mood. I had such a foul taste in my mouth, I just wanted to leave. I thought that maybe they wouldn't charge us for the ceviche but they did. If it were my restaurant, I would have only charged us for the mojitos that we drank and not the foul ceviche. If they hadn't charged us for the ceviche, I wouldn't have written a bad review and probably would have given them another chance as I liked the drinks and the environment. However, as I frequent Cartagena often, I will never go to this place again. They lost me for good.More

I want to start with the food was very good and the the atmosphere is very nice. However in this time where we are facing a health crisis I think all the safety regulations and mandates must be taken. During my visit all 3 cooks...had their mask on their necks during my entire visit. Other workers did the same at different times but I never saw the cooks with their mask covering their mouths. For me it is a serious precaution to comply for the sake of the customers. I left my comments with the waiter, In hope they take the necessary measures.More

The place has some tables outside, so you can see people pass by, be seen, watch, and hear local musicians play in the street and enjoy the beautiful nights of Cartagena. We went there early in the night, ordered some drinks with some food and...it was really good. Good prices and good service.More
